The Piano music of Jean Sibelius ranks among the greatest of Finnish music, and his 1924 set Five Characteristic Impressions demonstrates his importance, particularly in the field of Tone Poems. The fifth piece of this set, In Mournful Mood is a slower piece than the others, but is moving nonetheless. It is an impressionist piece that expresses imagery of reality with fabulous tonality and colour.

1. Oh, the Beautiful Treasure; 2. We Will Walk with Mother and Mourn; 3. Hop Up and Jump Up. Explore the American heritage of Shaker hymnody with these three settings of lesser-known, very appealing Shaker spirituals. Each brief setting grows from its underlying melody to make an exceptionally unified arrangement. With a different technique as the focus for each arrangement, these minute-long pieces make fine vocalises for your choir. Oh the beautiful treasure, with its square rhythms, horn calls, and harmonic texture opening out and closing, is excellent for teaching chord tuning. We will walk with Mother and mourn, with its smooth, stepwise, rising and falling melody, is a fine exercise for legato singing. Hop up and jump up, with its crisp rhythms and phrase fragments tossed from part to part, calls for rhythmic clarity and clean entrances and cutoffs. SSAA a cappella; 13 pages, plus editorial notes; duration: 3:15 min.; range: g to f; difficulty: easy-medium; from the Nina Gilbert Choral Series. SSAA, a cappella Published by: Treble Clef Music Minimum order quantity: 8 copies.

Manmohan Ghose was a professor, poet, and brilliant scholar from Eastern India in the late 19th century. He was educated in London, and was one of the first poets originally from India to publish poetry in English. A Lament is one of his earliest published poems; it progresses with vivid, scenic language from lullaby to permanent goodbye. Much later in life, Manmohan experienced a series of family tragedies that gave him a unique perspective on grief. After returning to India to mourn his father's death and eventually the passing of his wife, he never again made it back to England as he had wished to before his own death. The text of this piece has been paired with a mixolydian modal structure and a blend of musical elements designed to invoke a nostalgic, dream-like atmosphere. In the words of the composer: I like to think of this piece as a metaphorical hall of mirrors. The original 'image' of the melody becomes the source for multiple echoes and imitations that blossom into layers of polyphonic movement. As a nod to the poet's birth place, notes reminiscent of the kan-swar grace note technique of Hindustani classical music add ornamental interest to the piano and voices. This piece functions as an excellent educational introduction or further study into the concept of modes. When presenting this piece to a choir, directors may find it helpful to identify G as the tonal center and follow up with an explanation that G mixolydian has the same key signature as the key of C, because it naturally has no sharps or flats.Manmohan Ghose was a professor, poet, and brilliant scholar from Eastern India in the late 19th century. For those who trust in God, in the pain of sorrow there is consolation, in the face of despair there is hope, in the midst of death there is life. —Order of Christian Funerals Those who struggle with the inability to conceive, those who know the pain of losing a child before birth, and those who have faced their infant's death at the time of birth know that this season of mourning is often held inside, hidden and unseen. But God does not abandon us. Somehow, on the other side of loss an incredible story of resilience emerges. Bodies, though they are never the same again, heal. Couples try again, adopt, or reimagine. Those who mourn in isolation find not one, not two, but a community of others with whom they can identify. God's silence is not absence, it is the patient listening of a God who knows our grief first-hand, who weeps with us, who holds us as a mother holds her child. Death is never the whole story. The hope of new life surprises, confounds, persists. Of Womb and Tomb: Prayer in Time of Infertility, Miscarriage, and Stillbirth is a resource for individuals, couples, and parish communities who wish to accompany those on their grief journey. Filled with stories, prayers, Scripture, poems, and rituals this book may serve as a guide in creating prayer opportunities in a variety of settings. Together, let us bear witness to the Christian mystery—that new life is born of the womb and of the tomb. Once in a great while we encounter a resource that fundamentally changes the way we do ministry. We are so moved and formed and challenged that it is difficult, perhaps even impossible, to forget the sacred treasures contained within. GIA’s Of Womb and Tomb is exactly that resource. —John Kyler.
