French saxophonist, Claude Georgel was born in 1959. He studied at the Nancy Conservatory where he became curious in the modern music heard today, written or improvised. His interests and expertise have led him to create many compositions, including Crise(n) for Alto Saxophone and Electronics. Crise(n) is the third volume in the composer's series, 'Altitudes'. The work is frequently incorporated to final year syllabuses at conservatoires. Composed in 2009, a typical performance of Crise(n) takes around three minutes and ten seconds. The piece is highly virtuosic, making use of complex rhyhtms, ornamentation, unusual performance directions, exploited sound techniques and other extended techniques. For all advanced saxophonists, Georgel's Crise(n) makes for a challenging, yet exciting performance work..

Born in 1938, French composer Jean-Claude Risset is best known for his pioneering contributions to electronic music. Composed in 2003, Reprises Alto Saxophone and Electroacoustic Device is no exception to the composer's prolific contributions to the genre. Risset has experimented with a variety of software to recreate and produce sounds and synthesis techniques. Composed for Conservatoire students, a typical performance of Reprises lasts around 3 and a half minutes. The Saxophone demonstrates use of chromaticism, extended techniques and complex rhythms, amongst other features, whilst accompanied by an electronic part, helpfully recorded on a CD. For all advanced saxophonists, aspiring to play a range of repertoire, Risset's Reprises is essential..

A good introduction to the ubiquitous rock shuffle, this piece captures the fun and mystery of an illusionist’s sleight-of-hand close magic act. Every section is featured as the melodic lines are passed along over a funky groove. There are solos written for Guitar, Alto Saxophone and Trumpet. If you have access to an electronic keyboard, the piano part would sound great with a Rhodes or Hammond B3 sound (with the spinning Leslie effect, of course)!

Cyclops is intended for first-year band students. Young players will better understand the character and mood of the music once they are given a description of the beastly, mythological giant with only one eye in middle of its forehead. An effective performance will require young players to adhere as closely as possible to the suggested tempo with a continuous marcato articulation. The piece has only one theme which is first heard in the low brass and low woodwinds from m. 9 to m. 21. Students should be made aware of the need for balance between the theme and the countermelody at m. 41. Percussion will learn to execute a crescendo at m. 61. Wind instruments will learn to properly perform ff with accents at m. 63. If a Tam-tam is not available, many electronic keyboards can closely simulate the sound. Thank you for choosing this composition. Joseph Compello.Cyclops is intended for first-year band students.
