Festival Bells is a fast-paced and demanding opening work. The uplifting mood of the piece describes the anticipation of a festival in Austria. Within the middle section the Upper Austrian anthem is incorporated into the music.This composition was commissioned by the Upper Austrian regional music directorate on the occasion of the Upper Austrian regional music festival and was premièred at the Brucknerhaus in Linz by the Salzkammergut Bläserphilharmonia under the direction of the composer.A festive cheerful and spectacular piece of music!

Joe Cutler's Comfortable Music for Violin and Piano accompaniment.Comfortable Music was commissioned by the 2007 Stratford-upon-Avon Music Festival with the support of Arts Council England. The piece is in three movements which are marked 'Restrained and Elegant' ?Gritty (like some roadhouse music)' and 'Tense'. The piece is dedicated to the memory of William 'Winkie' Padel (1915 - 2007) who was Cutler's violin teacher from the age of nine to eighteen. The piece was first performed by Ruth Rogers (violin) and Martin Cousin (piano) on Wednesday 17th October 2007 at Stratford-upon-Avon Town Hall. It was recorded by Darragh Morgan (violin) and Mary Dullea (piano)and released on the CD 'Boogie Nights' (Birmingham Record Company).

The surviving member of the group Dewey Balfa tells the history of his musical family and demonstrates the role of their musical tradition in his life as he continues to spread Cajun music and culture in schools music festivals and by playing with other musicians in local dance halls and clubs. Artistic exploration of thematic material is a hallmark of David W. Moore’s writing, and you’ll find plenty of it here. There is an added practical advantage, too. All brass parts are dynamic, interesting and fun to play, but there is plenty of brass “resting time” carefully interspersed throughout the piece. The Hanover Wind Symphony New Jersey USA was founded in 1984 by its conductor Peter Boor. He commissioned HANOVER FESTIVAL to celebrate the band’s 15th Birthday and the first performance took place on October 27th 1999. The piece starts with a solemn brass fanfare. Woodwinds join in and the music subsides into an expressive chorale. A climax is reached and the fanfare returns. Trumpets introduce an explosive vivo section characterised by an energetic theme from the horns and low clarinets. A bridge passage with strong brass chords leads to a playful section that introduces a legato central theme under woodwind figures. This is taken up by the full band the playfulmusic returns and the original horn tune is reintroduced. Finally the opening fanfare returns this time accompanied by music from the vivo section until a fast and furious coda closes the work.

Journey of the Lone Wolf tells the story of the hungarian composer Béla Bartók. It was commissioned by Dr. Nicholas Childs for Black Dyke Band who gave the first performance on Sunday 26 January 2014 at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester as part of the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass. The composer's programme notes for each movement:1. Capturing the Peasants SongAfter the upheaval of moving to Budapest the young Béla Bartók meets Zoltán Kodály and the pair embark on summertime adventures throughout the Hungarian countryside to collect and catalogue the astonishingvariety (both harmonically and rhythmically) of gypsy and folk music heard in the Balkans. The arrival of WW1 plunges Bartók's beloved Hungary into chaos.2. Night MusicBartók was at times a cold man aloof and lonely. The odd moments of tenderness he showed are portrayed here in a series of evocative solos. His brief but intense affairs speak of a love he could only long for. Jazz is my night music and here there are hints of what Bartók may have heard in the USA later in his life.3. Flight and FightHaving been forced by the world's evils to leave his homeland of Hungary for America Bartók the anti-fascist felt isolated and angry. In this movement we hear his longing for a simpler time of gypsy folk dances as well as his maturity and depth as a composer finally exploring deeper colours and darker themes.

WINNER OF BASCA S 2012 BRITISH COMPOSER AWARD FOR WIND OR BRASS BAND.A Symphony of Colours was commissioned by the Fairey Band with assistance from the John Golland Trust. The first performance was given on 2 May 2011 during the European Brass Band Championships Montreux Switzerland by The Fairey Band conducted by Russell Gray. The same band gave the UK première on 29 January 2012 at the Royal Northern College of Music Festival of Brass Manchester. The title of this substantial work relates to the rare condition of Synesthesia where sufferers see colours or smell scent in response to hearing music. One of the most famous musicians who had thiscondition was Olivier Messiaen to whom this dramatic piece is a homage. Dobson s music incorporates sideways glances towards Messiaen s great organ work L Ascension. The Symphony s four movements which merge seamlessly into a single span are Joy Chroma (which is a journey through Dobson s own perception of Synesthesia) Endless Time (where tuned percussion features alongside extended solos for the euphonium) and the final climactic Ascent.Dobson s A Symphony of Colours which was conceived as a virtuoso work for elite brass bands.

Pianthology is a new collection of seven contemporary Piano works by living composers which includes a recording of each of the works performed by Nicky Losseff the volume's editor. Nicky Losseff who combines a SeniorLectureship at the University of York with an active career as a concert pianist has written extensive performance and analysis notes on all of the works giving helpful suggestions about the study and performance os each piecein turn.
