Die Tonsprache unserer Bulgarischen Weihnachtsmusik erinnert an den Stil Béla Bartóks und seine Art, aus Folklorematerial kleine Charakterstücke zu bilden. Die Oberstimme des Quartettsatzes kann mit Sopran- oder Altsaxophon gespielt werden. Julius Hemphill is celebrated for the brilliance and expressive range of his compositions for Saxophone Quartet and Sextet. The Saxophone Quartet works included in Book I and II were premiered by Julius with the World Saxophone Quartet (WSQ). Covering a broad range of musical styles, they are compelling vehicles for improvisation and equally works that can be performed without improvisation as a concert suite. Both of the works by the young composer (*1976) that appear in this volume are dedicated to the Budapest Saxophone Quartet. Motorway Junction, written in 1996, was the composer's first work in this genre, and it was followed by several transcriptions commissioned by the ensemble. In 1999, on the basis of the experience gained from these transcriptions he composed Alterego, which was likewise given its first performance by the BSQ.

Gregory W. Yasinitsky (b. 1953), Coordinator of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music at Washington State University, has a national reputation as a composer, arranger and saxophonist. He is a recipient of grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Meet the Composer West, Artist Trust, and ASCAP. His compositions and saxophone playing can be heard on recordings released by Soul Note, Palo Alto Records, the Musical Heritage Society, Vienna Modern Masters, Arizona University Recordings, Open Loop Recordings, and his own label, Yazz Recordings. Saxophone Quartet was composed especially for presentation at the Montana Saxophone Festival and is dedicated to the festival's director, saxophonist Brooke Ferris. The first movement, Calliope, juxtaposes mechanized rhythmic patterns against legato, lyric melodies. The second movement, Chorale, explores homophonic, harmonic textures which alternate with lyric and contrapuntal passages, and was adapted from a short work composed for saxophone quartet in 1975.
