Between 1905 and 1934, Gustav Holst was Director of Music at St Paul’s Girls School in Brook Green, London. Miguel Llobet's famous Catalan plucked string orchestra called the 'Lira Orfeo' was active in Barcelona from 1899-1906. Here we present a new engraving of all the surviving original scores, set in the same performing score format in which they were originally used 120 years ago. The Lira Orfeo quickly became an important part of Barcelona's cultural scene; with Tárrega as its honorary president the Lira Orfeo society was founded in 1898 and an official inaugural concert, shared between Manuel Burgés (pno) and Miguel Llobet (gtr) took place in Barcelona in 1898. The aim of the society was to offer a full musical education, both theoretical and instrumental, for guitarists and players of other plucked instrument family, with eventually with a place in its Catalan plucked instrument orchestra of the same name. The teachers for guitar were Miguel Llobet, Pedro Lloret and Domingo Prat. Prominent musicians such as Manuel Burgés and Baldomera Cateura were also on the teaching staff. Classes were given three times a week, and as the players were mainly amateurs with day jobs, these took place in the evening and often went on until 2 o'clock in the morning. The debut of the orchestra took place in 1903 and it gave regular concerts at top venues right up to the society's dissolution in 1907, mainly due to lack of funding. For the instruments used see the list of works below. The repertoire is varied, selected, arranged by Miguel Llobet it was mainly drawn from traditional and impressionist Iberian music, as well as the German classics, it includes a specially commissioned work Triomphe d'Orphée' by the famous Catalán pianist Manuel Burgés. We at Guitar Heritage are proud to present the first publication of this huge cultural contribution to music in its original form and prepared from the source manuscripts which were the work of Miguel Llobet. The edition has many illustrations, rare documents and photographs as well as a comprehensive critical commentary by Stefano Grondona - whose knowledge of Miguel Llobet, as well as of Catalonian culture, has made an edition of this scope possible. These arrangements are superb and presented as they originally were in the same score form. The now relatively rare instruments called for can be replaced by suitable alternatives - this is ideal and interesting material for adapting to guitar orchestra/ensemble or mandolin orchestra, or similar.

Da Auto da fé a Massa e potere, dalle giovanili pièces teatrali alla trilogia autobiografica e agli ultimi appunti degli anni Novanta, le opere dello studioso risultano tenute assieme da una sofisticata strutturazione acustica del pensiero, una metodologia della comprensione che di quel materiale si nutriva assiduamente, talvolta producendo interventi di autentica ‘archeologia sonora’. Interventi eseguiti in quella particolare officina mobile, avente per base la biblioteca-studio, che non smetteva di operare nelle osterie e nei caffè notturni, sui tram e per le strade, traendone anzi preziosa linfa. Da quei luoghi prediletti, Canetti ascoltava ed osservava il brulicare del popolo, che come nei quadri di Bruegel può essere placido e festoso, ma anche mostrare i denti e colpire al cuore; lì elaborava le nozioni di ‘cristalli di massa’, ‘metamorfosi’, ‘scarica’, sempre e innanzitutto aiutandosi con l’udito, come chi si serva dell’olfatto prima di portare cibo alla bocca. Seguendo questo intricato itinerario acustico è possibile incontrare Karl Kraus, Alban Berg, Hermann Scherchen, Cesare Pavese, James Joyce, Alma e Anna Mahler; e poi la lingua dei Boscimani, arcaica portatrice di miti, le voci degli animali e la danza dei Maori, il rumore prodotto dalle gocce di pioggia e le allucinazioni auditive di uno schizofrenico, la ‘massa statica’ dei concerti e la figura del direttore d’orchestra, incarnazione del potere: il tutto in una fitta trama di oralità , suono e musica che diventa per il lettore, come lo fu per lo scrittore, anche inesauribile e spesso inedita fonte di dati.

With his first String Quartet in D minor, op. 77, composed in 1855, the native Swiss composer Joachim Raff bid a brilliant farewell to Weimar. He had been there as Franz Liszt's assistant since 1850 and had made a name for himself in the city's art scene - now he embarked on new paths. He composed his second Quartet in A major, op. 90, already in 1857 in Wiesbaden, the spa town that was to become his home for 21 years. The two quartets are unequivocal works: orchestrally-conceived, full of energetic vigor, and at times uncompromisingly modern. They confidently continue the Beethoven tradition and attest at the same time to Raff's intensive confrontation with Richard Wagner's music during the Weimar years. In his chamber music, the composer wanted to achieve progress in an inherently historical way and to ground the individual substance in existing forms, as he told the Viennese violinist Josef Hellmesberger, who launched opus 77. The quartets, first published in 1860/62, found illustrious interpreters, among them, the Muller brothers' renowned ensemble, to which opus 90 was also dedicated, and Joseph Joachim.In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. As such, Raff parted with the weighty single opus in quartet composition - without, however, sacrificing musical quality.
