Par MUSSORGSKY MODEST. The death in 1873 of Mussorgsky's friend Victor Hartmann was the stimulus for the initial creation of what was to become one of the most vividly colourful works in the orchestral repertoire. However, Mussorgsky's original piano version of Pictures At An Exhibition was not even published until 5 years after his death, and remained almost unknown until Ravel's masterful orchestration of it in 1922. from 'Pictures at an Exhibition'-The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) was self-educated to a large extent but went on to become one of the 'Mighty Five' which also included Balakirev Cui Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Today he is considered the innovator of Russian music par excellence. He composed Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874 inspired by ten pictures produced by his then recently deceased friend the Russian architect and artist Victor Hartmann. The French composer Maurice Ravel made an orchestration of Mussorgsky's composition in 1922 which is now more well-known and more performed than the original Piano suite. For his transcription of Pictures at an Exhibition TohruTakahashi made use of the original Piano composition by Mussorgsky. The Great Gate of Kiev issued here separately is probably the best known melody from this classical masterpiece.

Its sections present the infernal noise of ghostly voices the chattering and quarrelling of witches the appearance of ghosts the dance of witches and demons the appearance of Satan the adoration and Black Mass and finally the pealing bells of the village church announcing the break of day and thus the end of the witches’ sabbath.Whether intentionally or not Mussorgsky actually finished the work on the eve of St. John’s Day (23 June1867) after spending twelve days on its composition. Technically speaking Joachim Linckelmann’s exciting version for Wind Quintet is the arrangement of an arrangement as Mussorgsky’s symphonic poem is almost invariably heard in the familiar version by Rimsky-Korsakov.

Few operas have had such a remarkable history as Mussorgsky’s masterpiece Boris Godunov. It exists in no less than three complete versions by the composer himself as well as posthumous editions and orchestrations by Rimsky-Korsakov (from which this arrangement is taken) Shostakovich and others.The Coronation Scene is set in the Square of the Moscow Kremlin between the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Cathedral of Archangel Michael the year is 1598. Night on Bald Mountain is one of the best-known works of 19th century Russian programme music in the world. With virtuosic orchestration Mussorgsky depicts a demonic witches? sabbath on St John?s Night on the Triglav mountain. Zsigmond Szathmáry (b. 1939) the internationally-known concert organist has reworked the music of this symphonic poem to create a new work which puts the sound possibilities of the concert organ fully to the test. In the process a virtuosic work has been created a technical and musical challenge for organists and a guaranteed treat for audiences. ?Tonally expressive dimensions coupled with unheard-of virtuosity? rejoiced onemusic critic after the performance.
