The last decades we humans have witnessed a significant number of disturbing developments. If we look at the direct and persistent destructive influence of humans on nature: air and water quality are reducing, soils are depleting, crops are short of pollinators, coasts are less protected from storms, deforestation, the degradation of land, loss of biodiversity and pollution. In stark contrast we find the intelligence and boundless creativity of humans: what about all the high technological advancements? What lies ahead in the realm of Artificial Intelligence? Will we let machines make human decisions? What ethical issues arise there? This composition reflects the desperation and urgency of the human need for action. The music draws inspiration from the brutal natural forces that ravage our world as a direct consequence of human failure and selfishness. Are we heading towards a 'Judgment Day'? Or will humanity find a way to reverse negative trends towards a more livable, peaceful, and joyful environment for humans, animals, and nature? To underscore this message, composer Peter Knockaert opted for a highly classical idiom that has been used by many composers in classical music: the 'Dies Irae'. Traditionally, the Dies Irae is the third part of a requiem (funeral mass). The text used in 'Judgment DayÂ? (for optional choir) is coming from the original Latin text.

The American state of Arkansas is often called 'the natural state' and 'the land of opportunity.' This piece belongs to Jacob de Haan's series of musical montages depicting various states in the USA, including Dakota, Oregon and Virginia. Arkansas is a suite in three movements based on a well-known native American folk song. It appears as a ballade, variations and finally accompanies a jazzy rhythm. The folk song helps provide continuity throughout the three movements. A perfect addition to any concert.Arkansas kent meerdere bijnamen. Der amerikanische Bundesstaat Arkansas tragt den Spitznamen The Natural State oder The Land of Opportunity. Lo stato americano dell'Arkansas e anche chiamato The Natural State o anche The Land of Opportunity.

Philip Sparke entitled this descriptive work in honour of America’s natural wonders with lines from the hymn America the Beautiful: O Beautiful the Spacious Skies is as light as a spring sky, From Sea to Shining Sea describes calm, flowing and bubbling waters, while in the third movement, For Purple Majestic Mountains, the glowing hues of the mountains are set to music.Philip Sparke ontleende de titels van de drie delen van dit progrmamatische werk over Amerikas natuurschoon aan regels uit het lied America the Beautiful: O beautiful for spacious skies is licht als een lentehemel, From sea to shining seaverklankt het stromende water in beken, rivieren en meren, terwijl in het derde deel, For purple mountain majesties, beelden worden opgeroepen van een indrukwekkende bergketen.Philip Sparke betitelte sein deskriptives Werk zu Ehren von Amerikas Naturwundern mit Zeilen aus dem Lied America the Beautiful: O Beautiful for Spacious Skies ist leicht wie ein Frühlingshimmel, From Sea to Shining Sea beschreibtruhende, fließende und sprudelnde Gewässer, während im dritten Satz, For Purple Mountain Majesties, die Erhabenheit der purpurrot leuchtenden Berge vertont ist.Écrite comme un triptyque, Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains s’ouvre avec des figures en filigrane jouées par les bois pour recréer la lumière et la légèreté d’un ciel printanier. Carl Strommen, an alumnus of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, composed A Walk in the Park for Walter Avenllaneda's John F. Kennedy High School Band. This composition features dynamic brass and sweeping & energetic woodwind lines. Adhere to natural phrases for which the music of Carl Strommen is known, especially in the beginning and end of the piece, to achieve the full sustained chords that are written. Make sure to bring out the three- note motif as it is orchestrated throughout the piece even in the beginning. The fast sections should be vibrant, energetic and with exaggerated dynamics that follow the line shapes. The Waltz in the middle requires a complete change of style and adds a wonderful contrast to the energy of the piece. The transition out of the Waltz into the new tempo will take some time but is well worth the effort to pull it off. The energy returns until we get a wonderful dramatic and bold ending.Carl Strommen, an alumnus of the Bellmore-Merrick CHSD, composed A Walk in the Park for Walter Avenllaneda’s John F. Taking his starting point from 17th century philosopher-poet Cyrano de Bergerac's 'Grandes Plaines du Jour', Hesketh powerfully fuses a huge range of performing and compositional techniques into this 12 minute work for solo violin. Inspired by Bergerac's imaginations of other worlds and utopian societies, the work explores extreme ranges and timbres whilst using techniques such as left hand pizzicato and natural harmonics. Open-fifth material, which is natural to the instrument, is prominent and short duets alternating between arco and pizzicato figures add yet another dimension.

With this composition in a rumba style, Peter Kleine Schaars invites us to enjoy a relaxed sailing trip in the waters of the Caribbean. The feeling of freedom on the boat is mirrored by an extensive melody surrounded by a palette of colourful harmonies the shades of the water while the clever percussion sets the course of the ship. Who wouldn’t dream of such an adventure? Although the musical themes and accompaniments have been constructed from combinations of rhythmic cells that occur less often, the composition sounds very natural and flowing. Assuming the rhythmic cells 1 to 8 are part of the basic skills of your band, in this composition, the accent rather lies on cells 9 to 13. The instrumentation is created in such a way that these ‘new cells’ occur in all parts, so that all musicians of the band become familiar with this rhythmic development.

Of Skies, Rivers, Lakes and Mountains was commissioned by the Northern California Band Directors' Association to honour their 50th Anniversary in 2012. The first performance was given by the Association’s 2012 Honor Band, conducted by Dr Royce Trevis, in the Harlen Adams Theater, California State University, Chico, California, on 4th February that year. The brief for the commission asked for a piece that celebrated the United States’ natural resources and composer Philip Sparke turned to Katharine Lee Bates’s lyrics for the song America the Beautiful, of which the first and last verses are:O beautiful for spacious skies,For amber waves of grain,For purplemountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining seaThe three movements each take their title from these verses:1. O Beautiful for Spacious Skies: Opening with filigree woodwind figuring, this movement aims to recreate the light and lightness of a spring sky, birds and blossoms floating on gentle breezes.2. From Sea to Shining Sea: A vivacious celebration of water bubbling in streams, rivers and lakes.3. America! America! Der Komponist Philip Sparke wählte daher die erste und letzte Strophe aus Katherine Lee Bates’ Text zum Lied America the Beautiful, die da lauten:O beautiful for spaciousskies,For amber waves of grain,For purple mountain majestiesAbove the fruited plain!America! America!God shed His grace on thee,And crown thy good with brotherhoodFrom sea to shining seaDie Titel der drei Sätze stammen alle aus diesen Strophen:1. Golden Peak is a concert piece that takes us deep into the world of volcanoes of the Auvergne in central France. They are dormant volcanoes whose origins date back from 7,000 to over 65 million years ago. Among the most well-known are the 80 volcanoes of the Chaîne des Puys, a spectacular natural environment ranking among the most fascinating landscapes in the world. The title of this dynamic and rhythmic piece is a reference to the local spa town of Mont-Dore and calls upon all sections of the orchestra. The central theme is very mellow yet riveting and the music depicts both the dynamism and tranquillity of the region. There are all sorts of marches: fast and slow, solemn and energetic, military and civil, procession and funeral. Orion is a so-called ‘slow march’. However the moderate tempo does not make a passive or heavy impression. On the contrary, this march contains natural optimism and spontaneity. The persistant ‘pulse’ gives this majestic march a noble character.

The Summer Isles are a group of islands located off the North West coast of Scotland which are famous for their wildlife. This piece, written for solo euphonium and brass band, reflects the natural beauty and relaxing atmosphere of the islands. The wonderful melodious nature of the euphonium is displayed in this piece and the opening theme is followed by melodic interplay between the soloist and cornets. This piece will surely be enjoyed by any audience. This rhapsody reflects the four seasons combined with the natural scenery that characterises the city of Québec and its surrounding region. Autumn is depicted with hunting horns playing in the forest, followed by a pastoral melody, principally in the woodwinds. Winter in the mountains is poetic and romantic. Spring arrives with a frolicsome and playful theme mirroring the start of new life. Soon everything flowers lushly, and the music swells into the full sounding energy of summer, bringing the work to a brilliant and dynamic close. A great work for any time of year.
