The hymn tune SHADES MOUNTAIN (K. Lee Scott, 1987) is paired with a 1976 Erik Routley text in this concertato for choir, congregation, brass quintet, organ, and optional timpani and percussion. Six stanzas of the fifteen-measure melody are provided here. Two stanzas are notated in SATB layout. Stanza 2 encourages the congregation to sing in four parts as in a hymnal layout (reproducible congregational pages are provided). Stanza 4 is for the choir alone, a cappella, in four parts. One stanza (1) asks the women of the congregation to sing with the women of the choir, and this concept is repeated with the men (stanza 3). Stanza 5 is unison, stanza 6 is unison with descant. An introduction and interlude before the final stanza round out the piece. A majestic piece, full of wonderful variety and color.

Glorious Hill may be performed by a male choir.Text by Pico della Mirandola (1463-1497) from De Hominis Dignitate.Glorious Hill was commissioned by the Hilliard Ensemble and first performed by them at its summer Festival of Voices in Lewes, Sussex, in August 1988. It was the first piece I wrote for the ensemble and I focused on the singers' unique ability to move with ease from early music to tonal music of the present day. There were techniques which I asked for which I hardly needed to notate - the staggered breathing of the two tenors to supply a continuous unbroken held note for example - and the piece moves between passages for solo voices and sections of highly chromatic homophony, almost as if the music were switching between the 12th century of Perotin and the 16th century of Gesualdo. Each of the four voices is given its own solo passage, sometimes accompanied, sometimes quietly supported by the other voices. The title, Glorious Hill comes from the name of the small-town Mississippi setting of Tennessee Williams' Summer and Smoke. I wrote the music for the 1987 production of this play at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre, the first time I had written any incidental music for the stage. Williams makes very specific demands in terms of music and there is one particularly powerful scene, the penultimate one, throughout which music and atmospheric sound effects are continuous. The principle character Alma argues passionately about the vital importance of human choice with the man to whom she has, too late, admitted her love. I watched this section every night throughout the 4 week run of the play watching the different ways in which the actress, Frances Barber, played the scene. There is a powerful emotional and philosophical connection between the imagery of this scene and a passage from the Renaissance philosopher Pico della Mirandola's Oration on the Dignity of Man which forms the text of Glorious Hill. This passage has been described as one of the few passages in Renaissance philosophy to treat human freedom in a modern way. The text, which is sung in Latin, is addressed by God to Adam before the fall from grace.Gavin Bryars.

A work for unaccompanied SATTBB choir, constructed in the form of a Byzantine Canon. The work was commissioned by James Lancelot and the Choir of Durham Cathedral who gave the first performance on the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of the death of St. Cuthbert: 20th March, 1987.'Commissioned by James Lancelot and the Choir of Durham Cathedral who gave its first performance on the 20th of March 1987, the 1300th anniversary of St Cuthbert's death. Structurally modelled on a Byzantine Canon, Ikon of St Cuthbert, 'an ikon of music and words in the place of wood and paint, seeks to recall, in its stylized form, the personal aura of Cuthbert, Saint of Lindisfarne'. The text is again by Mother Thekla, a contemplation on Cuthbert's life from his early piety and life as a monk, acts of spiritual healing, consecration as a bishop and retreat into solitude, to his death on Farne and ultimate burial in Durham. Imagery of water runs throughout the verses.

To Nocturner (2001) - for Chamber Choir (12 or 24 Voices). Texts by Ole Sarvig and Ib Michael. English version available: KP01444E Programme note: These two choral pieces for 12 voices consists of radical recompositions on of earlier themes: in Summer's Sleep we hear new combinations of two 'Sarvig melodies' from the 1970s (one of which is now in the Danish Hymnbook under the title aret, The Year): Michael's Night is based on an earlier, simple choral song (Star Mirror,1987), now for 12 voices and composed such that an original idea of simultaneously displaced, opposite motions cf. the poem) comes out as desired. Of the Nocturnes Norgard writes: Summer's Sleep wascomposed to stanzas of Ole Sarvig's poem The Year (from the collection Forstadsdigte ('Suburban Poems')) and forms the picture of the summer of life, which is asleep - while the heaven seed waits for the summer wind (invisible to every mind). The many layers of text are expressed musically in a multilayered choral texture with 'looks' up and down through the various tempo and time-worlds: summer sleep, summer dream. The second nocturne, Michael's Night, takes its name from the author Ib Michael, whose poem Star Mirror (from the collection Himmelbegravelse ('Sky Funeral') (1986) I pushed/coaxed him to expand from one to nine stanzas. The four selected stanzas set in the nocturne focus on the pan-erotic elements of the moonlit, starlit night. With the titles I have chosen I have stressed the mythic layer of the text, the summer night not as a dream but as sensual reality. The two nocturnes are dedicated to Ivan Hansen on the occasion of his fiftieth birthday on 25th February 2003, out of gratitude for over a quarter of a century of inspiring collaboration.
