Composed in 1834, Liszt's Grand duo is based on material from three pieces from the first book (op. 19b) of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (no. 1 in E major, no. 6 in G minor, and no. 3 in A major). While Liszt made an almost literal transcription of the first piece, he gave the second and third pieces a much freer arrangement, in the style of concert paraphrases. The large-scale concert piece was premiered by Liszt and Chopin on Christmas Day 1834 in a salon in Paris. The Grand duo was not published in Liszt's lifetime, and has survived as a draft.Schubert's Fantasy in C major (also known as the Wanderer Fantasy) was a defining musical experience for the young Liszt. He arranged this masterpiece of Romantic piano literature for piano and orchestra in 1851, at the beginning of his Weimar period, and it was premiered by Julius Egghard in Vienna in December of that year. By 1855, Liszt had transcribed this arrangement for two pianos, because it was played on 22 October 1855 at a concert held in Weimar in honour of his birthday. With the version for piano and orchestra, Liszt attuned the fantasy to the requirements of the concert hall, reinforcing the orchestral effects inherent in Schubert's composition. His aim with the two-piano version was to achieve a similarly grand effect in spaces too small for an orchestra. The arrangement for piano and orchestra appeared in print in 1857, followed by the two-piano version in 1862.This volume comes complete with a detailed preface in English, German, and Hungarian containing new research findings, several manuscript facsimiles, and a critical report in English.

In 1845 Franz Liszt embarked on a project to compose an Italian opera based on Lord Byron’s tragedy, Sardanapalus (1821). It was central to his ambition to attain status as a major European composer, with premieres variously planned for Milan, Vienna, Paris and London. But he abandoned it half way through, and the music he completed has lain silently for 170 years. Liszt’s difficulty in obtaining a libretto meant that composition only began in April 1850. He completed virtually all the music for Act 1 in an annotated piano-vocal score of 111 pages, contained within his N4 music ‘sketch book’. The unnamed librettist was an Italian poet and political prisoner, seemingly living under house arrest, and a close acquaintance of Cristina Belgiojoso. His libretto survives as underlay in the N4 sketchbook and has been critically reconstructed and translated. Sardanapalo is Liszt’s only mature opera. While he consistently referred to it in French, as Sardanapale, the published title of the Italian opera would almost certainly have used the Italian name, hence this forms the title of the first edition. There are three solo roles and a chorus of concubines. The manuscript was previously thought to be fragmentary and partially illegible, but it was finally deciphered to international acclaim in March 2017. Liszt’s score offers a richly melodic style, with elements from Bellini and Verdi alongside glimmers of Wagner and the symphonic poems ahead: a unique mixture of Italianate pastiche and mid-century harmonic innovation. It remains quintessentially Lisztian. The opera sets Byron’s tragedy about war and peace in ancient Assyria: the last King, effeminate in his tastes, is drawn to wine, concubines and feasts more than politics and war: his subjects find him dishonourable (a ‘man queen’) and military rebels seek to overthrow him, but are pardoned, for the King rejects the ‘deceit of glory’ built on others’ suffering: this leads only to a larger uprising, the Euphrates floods its banks, destroying the castle’s main defensive wall, and defeat is inevitable: the King sends his family away and orders that he be burned alive with his lover, amid scents and spices in a grand inferno. As Byron put it: ‘not a mere pillar formed of cloud and flame, but a light to lessen ages.’ For his part, Liszt told a friend that his finale ‘will even aim to set fire to the entire audience!’ This critical edition includes a detailed study on the genesis of Liszt’s Sardanapalo in English, German, and Hungarian, the libretto in the original Italian as well as in English, German, and Hungarian translation, several facsimile pages of Liszt’s manuscript, and a detailed Critical Report.

The main part of Supplement Volume 12 features the predecessor of the Grandes Études de Paganini, a series of six études written after Paganini between 1838 and 1840, and referred to by Liszt as transcendent performance (Études d'exécution transcendante d'apres Paganini). The series was inspired not only by the virtuoso violinist and composer's Caprices and Violin Concerto in B minor but also by Schumann's Paganini Études, which Liszt presumably encountered thanks to Clara Wieck at the beginning of 1838. The volume also includes the first and second solo piano versions of Die Zelle in Nonnenwerth (1840 and 1841), which Liszt composed a number of times in several versions,as well as two Wagner transcriptions and the first versions of adaptations of two works by Russian composers. A detailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value. Simultaneously with the Complete Edition volume in cloth-bound, its paperback for practical purposes is also published, the contents of which, except for the critical notes, is identical with the Complete Edition volume. The GRANDES ETUDES D´APRES PAGANINI are a series of six études for the piano written by Liszt. The pieces are based on the compositions of Niccolò Paganini for violin. Other pieces based on various other composers are also included in the volume. Adetailed preface in Hungarian, English and German, including new research results, numerous manuscript facsimiles and critical notes make this volume of the New Liszt Edition a specially important publication of scholarly value. Simultaneously withthis paperback for practical purposes, its cloth-bound Complete Edition volume is also published with the critical notes. Once Editio Musica Budapest had published critical editions of the complete piano solo works of Franz Liszt, they began work on a Supplement Series with the goal of publishing earlier and alternative editions of those works. Now in Volume 14, the editors present two alternate versions of the seminal Weihnachtsbaum: the first version (from autograph) and an early published version. Included also are alternate versions of his Annees de pelerinage, Troisieme annee and the Schlummerlied im Grabe, Die Trauergondel, and others. As always, both versions include background information on all pieces and facsimile copies. The hardbound edition includes all critical notes and a handsome blue hardcover, matching the rest of the series.

Volume 23, the penultimate volume in Series II of the complete edition contains free arrangements by Liszt dating from between 1859 and 1861. The best-known among these are the three Verdi opera fantasias: the Miserere du Trovatore, Ernani and Rigoletto, together with the two Wagner transcriptions: the Spinnerlied aus Der fliegende Hollander and the Fantasiestuck uber Motive aus Rienzi. The volume also contains two transcriptions each from Berlioz and Lassen, and one each from Bach, Meyerbeer and Dietsch. An interesting addition is the early version included in the appendix, which represents an important basis for study of the genesis of Ernani.

Determined to be seen as a complete composer, Liszt set out to create a full-fledged opera, only to later abandon the project. 170 years later, an examination of the manuscript revealed a virtually complete Act One in piano/vocal score form, and Sardanapalo finally came to life. This critical edition includes a detailed study on the genesis of Liszt's Sardanapalo in English, German, and Hungarian, the libretto in the original Italian as well as in English, German, and Hungarian translation, several facsimile pages of Liszt's manuscript, and a detailed Critical Report. Of this series of twenty-four études planned by Liszt only twelve were actually written, but the contemporary printed editions of the completed pieces (in the hope of a continuation) appeared with the series title 24 grandes études. By publishing these 12 concert studies it makes the earlier and technically more difficult version of the Transcendental Studies available for the first time since 1911 for study by performers and those engaged in music research. Contrary to the 1911 edition among the volumes of the first complete Liszt edition, NLE will publish also the text variants of some studies, an album leaf in F sharp major in facsimile and in transcription considered asthe 13th study planned by Liszt for the series, and the earlier versions of the so-called Mazeppa and Ab irato studies. In the volume will be published the puzzling album leaf, the so-called ''Prélude omnitonique'' and some similar album leaves, too.

The present volume contains the seven pieces from the Swiss years of the Années de pélerinage, together with the three pieces known as the Trois morceaux suisses, as they first appeared as part of the series Album d'un voyageur. Another work that may be of interest is a later version of the Clochette fantasy that remained unpublished in Liszt's lifetime. The description and evaluation of the sources and the notes included in the volume are detailed and full enough to satisfy all scolary requirements.Als Ergänzung zu den endgültigen Versionen in der Neuen Liszt-Ausgabe werden in dieser Serie die früheren Versionen präsentiert. In the continuing Supplement to EMB's Series I and Series II of the New Liszt Edition, Volume 12 presents earlier and/or alternate versions of works previously covered in the preceding Series. Perhaps no other event had the profound effect upon the young Liszt as his exposureto the artistry of Paganini, a master who brought his own instrument to new heights and new demands. Soon after, Liszt composed his own set of Bravourstudien, studies intended for superhuman pianists, later know as the Grandes Etudes de Paganini. This Supplement volume presents an excellent overview, multiple manuscript copies, and critical editions of earlier published versions (in the clothbound version). For advanced pianists.
