Nico Muhly 's Old Bones is a setting of four texts, three of which are the media's reaction to the discovery of the bones of Richard III in a Leicester car park, the fourth is a poem in praise of the man who supposedly killed the king. Arranged for Countertenor Voice and Lute, it was composed in 2013. According to Muhly , Old Bones begins with a news report that is delivered as a recitative while the Lute parts go through a number of interesting patterns. The work sets two texts by Philippa Langley of the Richard III Society who, in a series of interviews, brought an emotion and passion to the rediscovery of the bones that humanised the remains and brought the life anddeath of the king to the public's attention. It is therefore fitting that Old Bones ends with her words: Everyone else was looking at the old bones, and I was seeing the man..

The Right of Your Senses is a set of nine songs for children's voices, solo soprano, and orchestra written for the National Children's Chorus, American Youth Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. The texts are primarily 17th-century, by Thomas Traherne and George Herbert, but two of them come from the 11th-century Enchiridion by Byrhtferth. The overarching theme is the story of creation, but not just the list of objects created: the texts deal with the emotional resonances of the sun, the sea, the air, and the moon with all their mysterious, bright, and dark potential. There is a recurring gesture in the strings, introduced at the very top: a simple descending pattern which binds many of the movements together, even when hidden in the more tumultuous sections. The first two movements are bright, whereas the middle three movements are violent and deal with the angrier natural elements. The seventh movement is the most abstract and playful, and here a direct nod to Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, with a fast three-part canon depicting the behavior of the atom. The eighth movement, Night, is the slowest, and depicts the night sky. The final movement is calm, and encourages us: Be faithful in a little, and you shall be master over much. The piece ends with five strokes of high bells. x Nico Muhly.

Wish You Were Here, written for the Boston Pops, pays homage to Colin McPhee, one of the first western musicologists to study Balinese gamelan, as well as to the great illustrators Carl Barks and Herge' (responsible for Donald Duck & Tintin, respectively). Muhly has written a completely romantic and fanciful gamelan-influenced piece. On top of this twittery and excited music, a long, lonesome melody unfolds. After a desolate interlude with severe, ship's-horn brass, the energetic patterns start again, and the long line returns, this time with a triumphant, revelatory ending.Arranged for orchestra, this piece has a duration of approximately 8 minutes.
