Sam Pegg's A Child Of The Snows for SATB choir and Piano accompaniment is a setting of a poem by G. K. Chesterton. Chesterton was known as an avid traveller and was a friend to all he met on his wanderings. In his own house he was famed for his warmth and hospitality. For him the inn was almost a spiritual symbol. 'In all of my settings of his poems I have tried to convey the sense of a yearning journey of life coupled with the joy of finding something thought lost forever: we travel to a place that if we are truthful we never really left. The multiple revivals and adaptations make it a staple on all levels of theatre.The film-adaptation of the same name released in 1978 starring John Travolta Olivia Newton-John Stockard Channing and Jeff Conaway was highly successful both critically and at the box office keeping it the No. 1 highest-grossing musical in the United States to date. With the announcement of a three-hour live television broadcast of Grease in 2016 this score is not only guaranteed to be fun to rehearse and perform but is also more relevant than ever!

These fifteen numbers form what is called in Russian Combined Prayer Service or All Night Vigil consisting of the vesper and matin service linked together for the nights of vigil preceding the great holidays. I must not therefore be confused with the liturgy or the communion service for which Rachmaninov has also written a musical setting. A word of praise should be spoken for the English text provided by Canon Winfred Douglas. This indefatigable champion of the Russian school has labored lovingly over these translations and adaptations and has achieved a truly notable result.

The Minstrels was commissioned and performed by the BBC Singers in their Winter Solstice concert at St Paul’s Church Knightsbridge London on 21 December 2016 which was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. This lively non-religious carol a setting of the opening verses of the William Wordsworth poem of the same name paints vivid images of jocular minstrels and their followers completed with cittern effects in the bass part. The clever interplay between the vocal parts and opportunities for fun wordplay make this an exciting and rewarding sing and a very engaging piece for an audience.

The soaring soprano solo adds drama to this work based on Israeli poet Jacob Fishman's poem of the oil that once gave light and hope in times of battle now celebrated in the eight nights of Chanukah. Duration: ca. 3:10.
