Rheinberger's string quartets, his string quintet and his nonet for winds and strings were often performed and were very successful works during his lifetime. Their density, but also the delicateness of the scherzo movements are in the tradition of Schumann and Mendelssohn and these traits are combined with Rheinberger's sense for the clear, defined structure of the movements and solid contrapuntal writing. The octet for winds and strings is published here for the first time and the nonet, which is actually a reworking of this octet that Rheinberger undertook some twenty years later, is also published in this volume. Rheinberger made major changes from the original octet and he added two new movements to the nonet. Both works show especially the interest and pleasure which he derived from the variety in the differentiation of colors in ensemble playing. The Thema mit Veranderungen op. 93, which until now has been known as a work for string quartet, is published here with the double bass part which Rheinberger later added.

Canticum Honoris Americorum, a nonet for brass, is gratefully dedicated to the American Brass Quintet. This legendary ensemble was one of the very first touring brass quintets, and the ensemble for which I wrote three of my brass quintets. Over the years, there have been several legendary players who performed with the ensemble, hence the inclusion of Past, Present, and Future in the dedication. Canticum was premiered at Julliard by the American Brass Quintet, along with four of their graduating students. Hence, a brass quintet with an additional trumpet, horn, trombone, and tuba. The work is entirely celebratory in spirit--full of life and energy; virtuosic, fanfare-like musical gestures; and a feeling of joy throughout. The American Brass Quintet has recorded Canticum Honoris Americorum on their 2017 CD Perspectives, on Summit Records. -Eric Ewazen.

The title No people. comes from the surrealist Raymond Roussel. In 1932 he published a long poem called New Impressions of Africa. For this he commissioned 59 drawings to illustrate the text. The commission was given to the artist through a detective agency so he never knew who the commissioner was or saw the text he was supposed to illustrate. All he got was instructions for each drawing and he had to make the drawings accordingly. A typical instruction might beNocturnal landscape. Very starry sky with a thin crescent of moon. (No people.)orA rambler, arm raised and fingers outspread, dropping a pebble (still visible) down a well and seemingly straining to hear the sound of its splash. (No other people.)When Roussel put the drawings and text together, the ordinary everyday drawings took on a strangeness they might otherwise not have had if the artist had drawn with the text in front of him. It's the juxtaposition of both unknowns - text/drawings - that gives the final work its strange quality. Gerald Barry (2013).
