Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Lin gave the premiere of Pulcinella in both its concert band and brass band versions in January 2021. Pulcinella continues Sparke’s series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dell’arte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the full band and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The band then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The band then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close. On Wings of Flight is a jubilant, short overture that is meant to convey the wonder of soaring high above the ground. Programmatically, it can represent either the flight of birds or aircraft. Donat be concerned if you donat have some of the lower voice color instruments such as bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, and/or bassoon. Those instruments are doubled in the low brass. Bass trombone isnat essential as it doubles tuba, but a lack or scarcity of bass trombone and/or tuba isnat critical if you do have those other low woodwinds. The repetitive eighth-note accents should be lighter than normal so the ongoing effect is more propulsive than heavy. Keep those eighth-note patterns locked into the tempo so the band refrains from unwittingly accelerating. Think of the legato accented notes as slightly separated as opposed to being slurred. When the accented whole notes surrounded by rests are played, be sure they are held out for a full four counts. Save the crescendo for m. 19 and quickly drop back down in volume at m. 21. At m. 31, the whole notes do not crescendo to the same ff volume as the melody. Those parts are to save their crescendo for m. 35. Pay attention to the instruments that do not diminuendo at m. 39. In the slower section after m. 41, be careful that the diminuendos on the half notes donat sag in pitch as the notes get softer. Trumpets and horns at m. 49 must not play their notes as accents. Give particular attention to the diminuendos in the melody at m. 56, so that they fade out as the volume of the other instruments grows. The accented notes at mm. 85 and 86 should each be heard through the volume of the rest of the instruments, so that the addition of each pitch is adequately heard. The piece was written in 2003, commissioned by the Budapest Spring Festival. The process of the work follows the line of the composer s personal interpretation of the original poem. In this song the original dark, grim ending appears as a sort of cathartic dénouement. The theme is love versus mortality. The work is a kind of wholly composed song written in the 21st century its form derives basically from the text. The narrator begins the story in Sprechgesang and in the final lines of the poem tries to sing in a normal singing voice. This acoustic line is followed by the merging of the sinus tones into the clarinet parts. Thus, basically, a peculiar change of toneintroduced for dramatic purposes constitutes the essence of the song. First performance: March 2003. Das Stück entstand 2003 im Auftrag des Budapester Frühlingsfestivals. Der Verlauf des Werkes folgt der eigenen Interpretationen des Gedichtsoriginales. Das ursprünglich finstere Ende erscheint in diesem Lied wie ein kathartischer Ausgang. Sein Thema ist im Gegensatz zur Vergänglichkeit die Liebe. Das Werk ist eine Art im 21. Inspired by this new-found knowledge, she composed 7th Street Beat, writing beatbox percussion into the parts of all the instruments. The sounds imitate percussive effects normally made by a drum set. The beatbox vocal lines are optional - they are reinforcements for the beatbox sounds in the string parts. Also optional (but highly recommended!) is the improvisation section starting at m. 49.
