Norwegian Suite

Two cruises around the Norwegian Fiords on which I played and lectured were the foundation for this work. As I explored Grieg's piano music I became increasingly fascinated by the freshness of his melodies (well suited to the oboe) and the imaginative use of chromatic harmonies in the accompaniments. Of the ten items in this suite six are from his collections of Norwegian folk songs; the others from his Lyric Pieces. - Bryan Kelly

Tout d’abord, le prélude Au matin, extrait de Peer Gynt - Suite n° 1 du maître norvégien Edvard Grieg, puis la mélodie du très original Norwegian Wood des Beatles. Cette ballade acoustique signée John Lennon figure sur l’album Rubber Soul (1965). Il existe plusieurs hypothèses sur le sens probable du titre de la chanson. Quoiqu’il en soit, le titre de cet arrangement s’explique tout simplement par l’origine des deux mélodies constitutives de la trame musicale. Les deux thèmes s’alternent, se suivent et s’imbriquent pour former un ensemble évident. Version for Piano four-Hands-Grieg?s incidental music for Henrik Ibsen?s drama ?Peer Gynt? contains some of his best-known compositions such as ?Morning Mood? and ?In the hall of the Mountain King?.Grieg later extracted the most beautiful pieces to form two Orchestral suites and arranged himself these versions for Piano solo and Piano four-hands. There was a surprise in store for Henle when they werepreparing this Urtext edition. In the autograph and the first print run the second suite contained another movement the ?Dance of the Mountain King?s Daughter? which Grieg deleted shortly afterwards. Thischarming dance appears in the appendix to this edition printed again for the first time in 120 years! The Norwegian pianist and Grieg expert Einar Steen-Nøkleberg was co-editor for this edition and alsoprovided the new fingerings.

Grieg's Holberg Suite takes up a special position in the composer's overall work: If his previous works had been characterized primarily by a close connection with his Nordic home country he now trod completely new paths by falling back on Baroque forms. This work is juxtaposed by the orchestral suite 'Sigurd Jorsalfar' the content of which could hardly be more Norwegian. Grieg wrote the music of the textual piece of the same name which is based on a saga of two Norwegian kings who were brothers.

Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) a délibérément choisi de donner à ses œuvres une touche norvégienne et nordique très personnelle. La notoriété de plusieurs de ses œuvres a dépassé les frontières de la Scandinavie. Ainsi le Concerto pour piano en La mineur (1868) et la musique de scène Peer Gynt (1876) ont été salués par les mélomanes du monde entier. Edvard Grieg a également composé un grand nombre de mélodies chansons et lieder. Jacob de Haana choisi d?arranger trois de ces chansons : Fremad! Fremad! une chanson au caractère majestueux ; Stille Nu! plus mélancolique en raison de sa tonalité mineure et Fola Fola Blakken unallegro plein de gaieté qui vient conclure cette petite suite en trois parties.
