I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper: the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. --Psalm 121, King James Version Psalm 121, from the canonical Book of Psalms, is one of fifteen psalms (meaning sacred song or hymn) included in the Songs of Ascents (Psalms 120-134). These powerful texts about hope and perseverance were likely chanted by Jewish pilgrims as they traversed the ascending road into Jerusalem, which sits atop a hill known as Mount Zion. Thousands of years later, the words of Psalm 121 continue to uplift and inspire those afflicted with pain, grief, or suffering; one need only look to the hills.  .“I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. Schutz's setting of Psalm 115 Nicht uns, Herr, sondern deinem Namen is the only one of his Psalmen Davids, published in Dresden in 1619, which begins with a unison intonation, as also found in his late works (Schwanengesang). The three choirs in the work have different tessituras. The middle one is scored purely for voices, whereas in the one with a high tessitura only the lowest part is sung, and conversely in the one with low tessitura only the highest part is sung - the extremes are left to cornetts and trombones. Through this artistic treatment, the effect of the widely-spaced tessitura used to achieve color is considerably enhanced. With this publication of Psalm 115 in a separate edition, the last of the Psalmen Davids is now available in a separate edition corresponding with the principles of the Stuttgart Schutz Edition. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2004300.

These psalm settings are in the tradition of classical vocal polyphony as practiced in the modified a cappella style of the 17 th century (stylus gravis). Characteristic of this style is the continuo line, which generally doubles the vocal bass, only occasionally functioning independently. Despite its closeness to the tradition of the a-cappella style, Carissimi proves in this psalm to be a master of the artistic expression of words, which characterizes his music in the concertante style. This art is revealed here primarily in the rhythmically, highly differentiated diction of the words, which essentially distinguishes it from the flowing style of Palestrina. Dixit Dominus is not only Handel's first important church work, but it also exceeds the scope and design of both of his other Latin psalm settings. Although the exact time and occasion for the first performance is not clear, today the universality of this work make it ideal for use in festive worship services or in concerts. With Dixit Dominus Handel's complete Latin psalm settings are now available from Carus-Verlag in critical editions. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5523200.

Dixit Dominus (Ps 109), a psalm setting for double choir, is one of Vivaldi's most significant sacred works. In it, he takes up the old Venetian polychoral tradition, combining its compositional techniques with those of the instrumental concerto, the cantata and the opera. The broadly conceived cycle of movements, consisting of eight psalm verses and the doxology, is characterized by an expansive arch of tonalities connecting the two framing outer movements in D major (these are also thematically related): Dixit Dominus and Gloria Patri. The contrasting and varied inner movements are perfect examples of Vivaldi's skill in vividly portraying linguistic figures in music. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4000700.
