John Corigliano (b. 1938) is an American composer. The Poem In October was commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and first performed in 1970. Taking its text from a 1944 work by the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas it was later arranged for chamber orchestra by the composer as part of his Dylan Thomas Trilogy. It is cast in Rondo form with instrumental interludes interweaved with the vocal verses. While the metre and rhythms are irregular the melody line is highly lyrical reflecting the rich imagery of the text. It has been arranged for solo Tenor with Piano accompaniment.

For Soprano and Chamber Ensemble (Clarinet in A Viola Cello and Double Bass).This extended version of a knot of time was commissioned by Faith Wilson. First performance on 10th OCtober at the CBSO Centre Birmingham by Sarah Leonard (Soprano) and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group conducted by Richard Baker.''a knot of time' began its life in 1992 as a piece for the Composer's Ensemble for Clarinet Viola Celloand Bass with Mezzo Soprano. It was originally the title of only one setting using the poem 'Cada cancion' by Lorca. The tessitura of the vocal line always seemed generally too low for the music and there were also problems withthe clarinet writing so I changed the mezzo-soprano to soprano. I also felt that I should add more settings for the piece to have more of a life and so was thrilled when Faith Wilson asked me for some music to celebrate her 60thbirthday in 2008. I decided immediately to add two more Lorca settings to this first setting. I wrote 'El grito' and 'El silencio' quite quickly in June 2008. I added 'Aire de Nocturno' in October of the same year but stilldidn't feel that it was complete and so added a brief and rather explosive setting to close in April 2010; 'El puñal en el corazon'. The whole piece will be premiered in October 2010 with the soprano Sarah Leonard and membersof the BCMG eighteen years after the initial response to Lorca's texts.'     - Simon Holt

Schumann?s Cello Concerto Rediscovered In her first Urtext edition for Edition Peters, internationally renowned cellist Josephine Knight reveals Robert Schumann?s original version of his Cello Concerto in A minor Op. 129 ? a piece he actually called a ?Concertstück? ? removing generations of inauthentic editorial interventions. This is the only available modern scholarly edition of the work as Schumann originally conceived it, and restores the text from October 1850, based on the composer?s manuscript held in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków. The story of the suppression of his Violin Concerto by well-meaning friends is relatively well-known. Few, however, know that the version of the Cello Concerto that is routinely heard today is so far from Schumann?s original conception of the work ? not only in details of phrasing and articulation, but also featuring a different ending with a bold final flourish from the cello. Composed in a burst of inspiration in two weeks in October 1850 shortly after he and Clara had moved to Düsseldorf, Schumann (who in 1850 was still in good health) never heard the piece performed. In an effort to promote a performance of the work, he gave the score to the cellist Robert Emil Bockmühl. Bockmühl made revisions that Schumann resisted, and the hoped-for performance never happened. Schumann?s health failed and he died aged just 46 in 1856. The Concerto, in an already substantially revised form, was premiered in 1860 but it was not given significant recognition until it was championed by Pablo Casals in the 20th century by which time (and since) the text for the work had accreted additions and alterations from generations of soloists. Now Josephine Knight, Piatti Professor of Cello at the Royal Academy of Music, London has returned to the original 1850 manuscript of the work, which is in the Biblioteka Jagiello?ska in Kraków, to reveal Schumann?s original thoughts for the first time in a modern Urtext edition. The edition reflects Schumann?s original conception of the work as a Concertstück and restores Schumann?s musical text, free of posthumous interventions. ?My ultimate wish,? says the editor, ?is to give performers both access to, and confidence that they are playing from, an edition which is a true representation of the piece in its original form, no matter how much more difficult this might be. I found that incorporating the changes enabled the piece to take on a completely different character ? one that is lighter and happier, even ?cheerful?, as Schumann himself described the work.'

Linz Symphony-Mozart composed the Symphony In C Major K.425 known as the ?Linz Symphony? within a few days in October/early November 1783 in the palace of Count Johann Joseph Anton von Thun-Hohenstein (1711 1798) in Linz where together with Constanze he stayed for three weeks on the way back from a trip to Salzburg. ?On Tuesday the fourth of November? wrote Mozart to his father on 31 October (the day after his arrival in Linz) ?I will be giving a concert in the theatre and since I have no symphony with me I am writing one as fast as I can for it must be ready by then?.
