In Dublin Dances Jan Van der Roost has combined three well-known traditional Irish melodies to form an attractive medley. The medley contains Brian Boru’s March, a melody made popular by worldfamous flautist James Galway, followed bythe atmospheric tune The Minstrel Man and, as a cheerful finale, The Irish Washerwoman. Add a little magic from the Emerald Isle to your concert with this rousing medley.

In this varied suite, named after the Swedish region Medelpad, folk dances in a Swedish fashion take stage in diverse tempi, styles and atmospheres. For Medelpadia, Van der Roost used a combination of an existing theme and newly composed music with a folk-like feel. Fascinating folk music in a well-composed framework!

This suite was written in the style of traditional Russian folk music, but does not use existing melodies or themes as its basis. The colourful and varied work contains a number of surprising turns, but also familiar sounds. After the introduction, a kind of Trepak follows ? a fairly quick dance with attractive themes. The second movement (Garovot) is predominantly slow and conveys some melancholy, although, during a more dynamic passage the passion flares up again. Finally, the Troika takes us along in a reindeer sleigh through a grand snowy landscape. This is a wonderful tribute to the music of Eastern Europe in the style of some of the great Russian masters.

Jan Van der Roost composed Dances of Innocence to commemorate a girl who passed away at the tender age of 14. In contrast to the somber, joyless tone such a memory usually invokes, it is a rather cheerful work that reflects the innocence and lightheartedness of a child. It does open in a serious mood, but quickly becomes more energetic and turns into a dance. Dances of Innocence is an ode to all the beauty, sincerity and cheerfulness that a child radiates. Duration: 6:00.

In composing Puszta, Jan Van der Roost wrote folk dances related to Slavonic folk music. Its character and sounds are comparable to the Hungarian and Slavonic dances by Brahms and Dvorak and to the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Liszt. All the melodies, however, are newly composed, not adapted from existing dances.

An intrada, a galliarde, a pavane and a ballo. For this composition thecomposer has chosen four old dance forms in Italian and French stylesand used them as the basis of this concert suite. Tambourine and handdrum parts have been included to give an authentic medieval feel. Quatre danses anciennes d’origine française et italienne. Balkanya, a suite in three parts composed by Jan Van der Roost, was commissioned by the Music School of Gaillon - Aubevoye (France) for the celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its creation. Jan Van der Roost dedicated the piece to the director of the school: Thierry Patel. As in his earlier work, Puszta, the composer makes no use of existing dances or themes in these three Balkan dances. This high-spirited suite takes its own approach to the folk music of the Balkan countries and is characterized by unique changes in tempo and spirit.

From Ancient Times is a major work for brass band, inspired largely by the music of the Franco-Flemish School of the Renaissance. Hints of Gregorian chant and middle age dances pay tribute to music from even earlier times. The foundation of this spectacular work rests on truly 'ancient times' while the tonal language is of a much more modern nature!
