Particularly during the early 1740s, Johann Sebastian Bach concentrated intensely on studying the compositional technique of strict vocal polyphony. As an inspiration, he studied the works of older masters, copying them and, for the most part, performing them as well. A set of single parts for the Missa canonica by Francesco Gasparini in an instrumentation by Bach were recently discovered in the collection of the former Ephoralbibliothek Weissenfels; some of the parts are in Bach's own handwriting. Gasparini was esteemed in Germany particularly as a master of elaborate counterpoint and audacious harmonic writing. Bach amended the music text with a view to certain aspects of performance practice, clearly following a very specific concept of sound organization. His interest in strict counterpoint was paralleled by a tangible re-orientation in Bach's own compositional technique at the beginning of the 1740s. Francesco Gasparini's Missa canonica therefore served as a practical model for the highly developed art of canon writing and the strict polyphony in Bach's late works, as we encounter them, for example, in the B minor Mass. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3550300.

This unique collection of Indian character pieces reveals a genre that has been neglected for many years, with much of the music having been out of print since the 1920's. Musically, the pieces are appealing to play and are a fascinating reflection of social and political issues our nation was facing at the turn of the 20th century. Contains detailed historical notes on this nearly forgotten aspect of American classical music, along with supplementary fingerings and practice suggestions added throughout by editor Stephanie Bruning, professor at Morgan State University, who is both a celebrated piano performer and expert in piano pedagogy.

The 10 fun-to-play studies are inspired by Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, John Coltrane, and many more, offering a unique basis for in-depth study and analysis. Historical insights as well as recommended listening and reading make this edition an indispensable part of jazz education. Each etude includes a study guide that covers jazz theory, but also goes well beyond the math, providing insight into how bebop masters mold solos into profound musical statements. Concepts of shape, timing, balance and pacing provide the framework in which ideas unfold and flow. Additional examples, practice suggestions, historical perspectives, listening and reading suggestions (60-plus pages total) result in an instant classic that's perfect for individual or classroom study. The downloadable play-along recording has versions with and without the soloist, and features Michael Dease (trombone), Mike LeDonne (piano), Peter Washington (bass), and Joe Farnsworth (drums). But what if you aren't a student or a professional? The Essence of Bebop still has immense value to those interested in bebop and hard bop. By encouraging readers to understand the music's intent, slow down their listening, and focus on the swinging, the series can help a jazz newcomer dig this cerebral, often pulse-pounding music. - Morgan Enos, Discogs.

The Actus tragicus or Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit BWV 106 remains one of Bach's best-known and most admired works, one which continues to resonate to this day - a work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve (Alfred Durr). The cantata is one of the earliest known vocal works by Johann Sebastian Bach. It was written during his time at Muhlhausen, probably in 1707, when Bach took up the position of organist at the Divi Blasii Church. A possible occasion for its composition may have been the funeral of the mayor of Muhlhausen, Adolph Strecker. The short, slow Sonatina with two recorders, two gambas and continuo gets the listener into the mood of the character of the cantata. This instrumental combination is unique in Bach's vocal output, but could derive from a central German tradition. This new edition is a critical-practical edition which combines both the latest discoveries in Bach research with a detailed Critical Report as well as addressing current questions on performance practice. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3110600.
