Composed with a spirit of perseverance and hopefulness, the text (paraphrased from Psalm 139) shares a message to have faith even during the darkest days, and a reminder that a light will always shine through the darkness if we have the courage to see it.Featuring a flowing piano accompaniment and lyrical (optional) horn solo, this piece was written with an equal relationship between the major mode and the minor mode (as demonstrated by the alternating piano harmonies, neither chord revealing a clear tonality.) This tonal obscurity represents the relationship between dark and light: a somewhat codependent relationship through which the melody struggles to find stability. As the understated chorus reveals and repeats the core message of the text, the melody gains confidence in its role among struggle between light and dark. The piece concludes with a final triumph of light over dark, this time with harmonic clarity and hopefulness for the future.  .

'Acquainted with Night', is a cycle of six songs, for alto and strings, harp and timpani. The texts are all concerned with different aspects of night. The first song, 'Lullaby' to a poem by Beaumont and Fletcher, seeks to evoke the 'care-charming' powers of sleep. The second, a setting of Robert Frost's 'Acquainted with the night', is concerned with the lonely world of a strange city at night and the music is characterised by an insistently repeated figure in the accompaniment. The third song contrasts the calmness of the night with the turbulence in a lover's mind - the poem is by the Earl of Surrey. 'Out in the dark' a poem by Edward Thomas, is the text of the fourth song. It is in the form of a scherzo and deals with the mystery and strangeness of night, and, as the poet puts it, the 'might' of night. It is, as the poet says, a hymn to night and the chordal nature of the accompaniment suggests this quality. This song leads directly into the last, which is in fact a reprise of the opening 'Lullaby' so completing the cycle.

The orchestral version of Hostkvall, with words translated into German by Ferdinand Tilgmann, was originally written for the soprano Aino Ackte (1876-1944). The date of the premiere is not known, although an early performance took place in Paris, when Minnie Tracey sang the piece under the direction of Alfred Cortot on January 14, 1905.It remains uncertain why Sibelius wrote another version of the work with German text only for voice and string orchestra around the same time. As far as is known, this latter version has never been performed before its first publication in the volume of the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works in 2003.

Autograph lays bare Mendelssohn's Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream To this day, Mendelssohns epoch-making Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream has been performed on the basis of a more than dubious transmission. Neither the first edition of the parts (1832), and certainly not the print of the score based on these parts (1835) go back directly to the autograph of the 17-year-old composer, which is now located in Krakow. No wonder, since Mendelssohn had breezily given away his original at an early date. The result: during his lifetime, versions were published with his authorization, even though they were full of unintended inconsistencies. Yet the autograph of 1826 is unequivocal: it is clear, practically free of irregularities and diverges considerably from the corrupted printed version.
