In Little Seeds you will find new hymns from my heart. My devotional life is given to you in my hymnwriting. During the past three years I have been writing songs for the unity of the church - songs reminding us of our baptism. I have been writing biblical story hymns for lesser-known characters. I have written paperless songs that may be easily memorized. I set a Rumi poem. There are new hymns for Christian missions from everywhere to everywhere. You will find new texts and musical settings for folk songs from around the world. I hope I have treated these with the love and respect they deserve. You will find alternate arrangements of some songs that may be useful in different settings. Lim Swee Hong composed three tunes for this collection at my request. I am also pleased to include Lianne Tan's first published hymn tune in Little Seeds.

“Mark Miller, composer, minister, professor, and musical griot, is carrying on the tradition of creating New World hymns for a nation hungry for songs that speak to the head, heart, and crisis of modern living. Professor Miller reminds us, hope will never fail, even when anguish and apathy seem to prevail across the landscape of our country.†—From the Foreword, Otis Moss III, Trinity United Church of Christ, Chicago, Illinois  .

Jason Max Ferdinand's book Teaching With Heart is the first book to directly help us address the societal issues in our choral rehearsals. Not attempting to separate the music from social issues, this new tool in the classroom uses musical examples to address uncomfortable topics and hopefully 'open minds and hearts.' Built to ask singers to read, watch, listen and then to respond and discuss, this resource has been developed with the help of nine outstanding contributors and ten composers and arrangers. I strongly urge you to take a look at this new resource for your classroom. --Jo-Michael Scheibe, D.M.A. Professor, Department of Choral and Sacred Music Conductor, University of Southern California Thornton Chamber Singers Teaching With Heart is a timely and relevant resource that offers a well-crafted, research-based approach to choral music education. Students will learn how diverse choral repertoire can be used as a tool to not only advance musicianship, but also as an access point for critical thinking and the enhancement of social emotional learning skills. --Rollo A. Dilworth, D.Mus. Vice Dean and Professor of Choral Music Education Center for the Performing and Cinematic Arts, Temple University Through valuable repertoire suggestions, listening examples, video interviews, quotes, and teaching activities, this resource provides designed lessons helping students apply, synthesize, evaluate, and comprehend music from an artistic perspective and, more importantly, a human perspective. --Brandon Boyd, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Choral Conducting, Choral Music Education University of Missouri 'How would you suggest a Caucasian teacher talk about social justice issues with students of color?' a student from Georgia Southern University asked via ZOOM. Dr. Ferdinand responded by quoting from Teaching With Heart, specifically sharing inspiration from the module titled 'Justice, or Just Us?' Powerful conversation ensued and our future educators were immediately on fire to get ahold of these teaching tools! We are so grateful for Dr. Ferdinand's generous leadership and his extremely well-timed Choral Conductor's Compendium to help guide us through current times and into the future. --Shannon Jeffreys, D.M.A. Director of Choral Activities Georgia Southern University Jason Max Ferdinand is a Full Professor, Chair of the Music Department, and Director of Choral Activities at Oakwood University, where he conducts the Aeolians of Oakwood University. GIA is pleased to release an impassioned new recording from Jeanne Cotter. Tender Hearted is filled with songs that pour forth the message of God’s unconditional love. These songs tell the story of Christ’s heart of compassion and of his gentle yet untiring call for us to live as his disciples. Written for her three children, the title track “Tender Hearted†encourages us all to clothe ourselves “with kindness, patience, and humility†and to “live a life worthy of our calling.†The moving texts of “All Is Holy,†“The Way You Love Me,†and “In You, I Abide†remind us that we are called to be imitators of Christ—to build the kingdom through our acts of mercy, kindness, and compassion. The music of Tender Hearted is not just about our outward actions of grace and holiness toward others. It is also about the grace that God shows each of us daily. Songs like “Do Not Be Afraid,†“By Your Love,†and “ I’ll Walk by Your Side†are filled with encouraging words of hope and healing. Tender Hearted is quintessential Jeanne Cotter. When you listen, be prepared for your heart to swell with love, kindness, and peace.

Original anthem From John Parker & Joel Raney, here is a light-hearted, 2-part mixed original, telling the story of the nativity in a jazzy style that hings at the Caribbean. At the mid-point, a gentle, unison treatment of What Child Is This appears to remind us of the simplicity of the moment. The colorful accompaniment with its distinctly Middle Eastern flavor, calls us to mind a journey through the desert to witness the birth of the King. . . where a stable light shines.

Biography of Timothy Dudley-Smith Timothy Dudley-Smith is the greatest hymn writer of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Gray and Music have demonstrated his superb qualities as a poet and as an inspiration to contemporary Christianity throughout the world. In this admirable account of his work, they have set it in context, relating the preoccupations of his life to the political and social world in which he lives; and they have added commentaries on many of the hymns that explains their extraordinary ability to stir the heart and satisfy the mind. This will be the definitive account for many years.--J. R. Watson, Emeritus Professor of English, University of Durham, UK, Co-Editor of the Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology.
