Frontier Vision is a concert or contest piece based on three elements: the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Reformation Day, the Martin Luther melody, A Mighty Fortress Is Our God (Ein Feste Burg ist unser Gott) on whichthis composition is based, and thirdly the spreading of the evangelical movement in the late 19th century, of which the analogous storyline forms the structural basis of this work. The work Prevision has been composed in a free fantasy form. Deep in thought the composer sketches his prevision - the development of his small grandson growing up to be an adult. After a brilliant introduction, a slow march follows, whichsymbolises the first steps toward adulthood. Aspects such as love and a sense of security, that are indispensable for a positive development, are presented in a calm middle section, after which an energetic closing part refers to the rebelliousnessof an adolescent. The grand finale of Prevision expresses the grandfather’s and composer’s positive picture of the future. Prevision is een in vrije fantasievorm gecomponeerd werk waarin de componist het opgroeien van zijn kleinzoon verklankt. Na een luisterrijke inleiding volgt een langzame mars die de eerste stappen op weg naar volwassenheid symboliseert. Aspecten als liefde en geborgenheid, onontbeerlijk voor een positieve ontplooiing, komen naar voren in een rustig middengedeelte, waarna een energiek slotdeel verwijst naar de opstandigheid van een puber. Het grootse slot van Prevision geeft gestalte aan het positieve toekomstbeeld van de grootvader en componist.In Prevision entwirft Jan de Haan einen Ausblick auf die Kindheit seines Enkels. A Vision of the First Light was commissioned by the Kitami Wind Ensemble, as a commemorative work for their 30th Anniversary. Satoshi Yagisawa composed this piece to conjure “Illusion seen through the dawn†of Hokkaido. The work starts with a quiet and beautiful introduction describing the landscape. The music is rising towards a festive, celebrating fanfare, before a deep tranquility descends, towards the end, creating a moment of reflection. A Vision of the First Light werd geschreven in opdracht van het Kitami Wind Ensemble, ter gelegenheid van het dertigjarig bestaan van dit orkest. Satoshi Yagisawa componeerde het werk op basis van ‘beelden gezien bij het ochtendgloren’ van Hokkaido. De compositie opent met een mooie, rustige beschrijving van het landschap. A Vision was written for the tenor Anthony Rolfe Johnson and commissioned by the London Mozart Players. The first performance was at the Gregynog Festival in June 1991. Geoffrey Burgon has set 7 poems of John Clare (1793-1846) and the poems that Burgon has chosen were all written whilst Clare was in Northampton Asylum. The work is scored for tenor and string orchestra. There is a prominent part for solo violin, which reflects Clare's love of that instrument and upon which he would play folk tunes and dances.
