Iain Farrington's Bluesday for solo Organ. Composed in 2010. Dedicated to Robert Houssart. 'Judging by this bunch of new public­ations the year 2010 was a busy one for British composers of organ music though quite why it has taken six or seven years for almost all of this music to appear remains unexplained. And if one were asked to guess the most recent work in terms of 'modem language' it would be this study from Iain Farrington. Dedicated to Robert Houssart this short piece combines - as one might infer from the title - certain phraseology from musical worlds not often encountered on a concert organ whether in a church or civicbuilding but it is not merely the thematic line (such as it is) that snakes in an un­certain manner but also the impacted sense of occasional harmony that speaks in a more modem musical language. With Music for the Spirit, there is now a choirbook specifically for the feast of Pentecost for the first time, closing a gap for an important feast of the Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican churches. Over 500 years of choral music from Renaissance to the modern age are covered here with compositions from the German-, English-, Italian- and French-speaking regions. Almost all the great composers of European sacred music are represented, from Palestrina over Byrd, Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Gounod, and Bruckner to Reger, Parry, Stanford, and Distler. With the chronological order, the development of the genre of the Pentecost motet and sacred choral music in general can be traced easily. All pieces can be performed by mixed choir a cappella or with organ accompaniment. In some cases, the accompaniment has been supplemented or arranged by the editor Stephen Harrap, in individual cases also the choral parts, e.g. when the original was composed for male voices only. Songs of Praise for Organ by television music composer Herbert Chappell was commissioned by the BBC in 1980 as the signature theme for the long running television programme of the same name and continued to be used until the late 1980s. This piece is lively toccata underpinned by a hymn-like melody and is suitable for organists of moderate abilities and may be used as a thrilling recital piece. 'I decided it should be a lively toccata; this I underpinned with a broad-shouldered hymn-like melody rather than a choral. It was recorded for television by Simon Preston at the organ of Christ Church Oxford and quickly became somethingif a favourite with organists all around the world (possibly because it sounds impressively virtuostic and makes a lot of noise but is not that difficult to play). For example it brought a spirited conclusion to the service that celebrated with a pack congregation the life of Dame Thora Hird for so many years the presenter of the programme on BBC television.'
