With the 2nd Organ Sonata in A flat major of 1871, we encounter a masterpiece which is already fully formed. The first movement, only loosely related to sonata form in the sense of the title Fantasie-Sonate, the atmospheric Adagio espressivo, and the grand finale movement with its fugue and references back to the first movement ensure great success for the grand romantic organ sonata, in spite of its technical demands.

Josef Gabriel Rheinberger dedicated his 9th Organ Sonata (composed in May 1885) to Alexandre Guilmant, the indefatigable concertizing virtuoso who had already given the first Paris performance of Rheinberger's 1st Organ Concerto (in F major, op. 137). With opulent harmonies, conspicuously frequent tempo changes, and chords which are a true delight when played on a Cavaille-Coll organ, the rhapsodic Fantasie at the beginning of the 3rd movement certainly lives up to its name. The separate edition is taken from the Rheinberger Complete Edition.

Johann Kuhnau (1660-1720) is a composer whose fame is connected with a single work of a rather comprehensive oeuvre: There is hardly an organist who has not played his first biblical sonata 'Der Streit zwischen David und Goliath'. With the biblical sonatas and even his printed piano booklets which stand out for their relatively easy playability, Kuhlau primarily wanted to reach the circles of middle-class music lovers in which domestic music played an important role. Although he left an extensive repertoire for keyboard instruments, the original organ works take up only little space. The new edition of selected works, 'Ausgewahlte Werke', contains not only 'Der Streit zwischen David und Goliath' but also two preludes and fugues in G and B flat major, a sonata in B flat major as well as a toccata in A major and a fugue in G minor. With notes on interpretation and critical report.

It is now regarded as a proven fact that J. S. Bach derived two works from a trio sonata which was most likely in the key of B flat major: the well-known organ Trio Sonata No. 1 in E flat major BWV 525 and the slow middle move-ment of the incomplete Flute Sonata in A major BWV 1032. In his reconstruction, Klaus Hofmann comes as close as possible to the presumably lost original version. While the melody instruments - the range suggests an alto recorder and oboe - were adapted practically without change, the bass part underwent considerable alterations. An organ pedal part simply is not a continuo line. However, Hofmann found a stylistically and idiomatically compelling solution to this dilemma. In his recon-struction, Klaus Hofmann comes as close as possible to the presumably lost original version.
