Meditation is based on Dear Lord and Father of Mankind (1887) by the English composer and organist Frederick Charles Maker (1844-1927). This is a calm, introverted work that however has an intense effect. In the first section, the solo euphonium is given an important role, leading to one of the loveliest of all English hymn melodies. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) is known for his unique composition style. Incorporating complex rhythms, harmony and melodies, The Ascension for Organ is no exception to the composer's popular, distinctive style. The Ascension was originally composed for orchestra by Messiaen in 1932-1933. The composer described the work as Four Symphonic Meditations and the sections are; 1) Majesty of Christ praying that His Father should glorify Him, 2) Serene Alleluias from a soul longing for Heaven, 3) Alleluia on the Trumpet, Alleluia on the Cymbal, and 4) Prayer from Christ ascending towards His Father. Messiaen arranged The Ascension for solo organ a year later. The first, second and fourth movements are arrangements of the orchestral version, however, the composer created a new third movement; Outburst of joy from a soul before the Glory of Christ, which is its own glory. The Ascension is essential to all advanced organists seeking to expand and vary their repertoire.

This piece was composed in 2009 for a commission by Shinjuku Bunka Center to commemorate its thirty years since its opening.It is an impressive work with a brilliant, bright fanfare, and the stately sound of the church organ reverberating through the concert hall. The first performance was given by Hiroko Takahashi, a house organist of the center, with Shinjuku City Wind Orchestra conducted by Shigeto Ishizu. Original works for church organ and wind orchestra are surprisingly scarce. This is a fresh opening piece, to be followed by an organ solo which might lead to a march.Dit werk is in 2009 gecomponeerd in opdracht van het Shinjuku Bunka Center, ter gelegenheid van het dertigjarig bestaan van dit concert- en cultuurgebouw. Het is een indrukwekkend stuk muziek met een schitterende, stralende fanfare, waarbij de orgelklanken door de concertzaal schallen. De première werd gespeeld door Hiroko Takahashi, huisorganist van het centrum, en het Shinjuku City Wind Orchestra onder leiding van Shigeto Ishizu. Verrassend genoeg zijn er niet veel oorspronkelijke composities voor orgel en blaasorkest geschreven. Gelukkig is dit een mooie aanvulling op het repertoire. Bei der Uraufführung spielte Hiroko Takahashi, der Hausorganist des Zentrums, zusammen mit dem Shinjuku City Wind Orchestra unter der Leitung von Shigeto Ishizu. Originalwerke für Kirchenorgel und Blasorchester sind überraschenderweise sehr rar. Dieses Stück eignet sich perfekt als Eröffnungsstück, dem ein Orgelsolo und dann eventuell einMarsch folgen könnte. Bei dem klangprächtigen Prélude (Procession) c-Moll handelt es sich dem Titel wie der Faktur nach um einen Trauermarsch; mit einem Umfang von 51 Takten und einer Aufführungsdauer von drei Minuten ist es eine der kürzeren eigenen Kompositionen, die Georg Schmitt in der von ihm selbst herausgegebenen Orgelmusiksammlung Le Musée de l'Organiste veröffentlicht hat. Entgegen den meisten anderen Orgelwerken Schmitts trägt es keine Widmung. Als Werk ist Grand Chour im Untertitel vermerkt, so dass sich konkretere Registrieranweisungen erübrigen. Ein ausführliches Nachwort informiert über Leben und Schaffen des Komponisten sowie das hier vorgelegte Stück.
