Salat Babilya was inspired by music from Iraq, in particular the beautiful sonorities of the oud, a variety of Middle Eastern lute dating back to antiquity. An oud-like resonance is evoked without the use of a bow via a combination of 'arabic' scales, open strings, ringing harmonics and ornamental inflections.The particular oud piece that inspired this one was written to help lull the children of Bagdad to sleep during bombing raids and bears the same title, which translates from the Arabic as 'Babylonian Prayer. No one ist das kompositorische Resultat der einjahrigen Studien am IRCAM, wobei sich die Anwendung des Computers lediglich auf die Kalkulation formaler und harmonischer Prozesse konzentrierte, auf die Erstellung von ,,Spielregeln, denen die Handschrift folgte. Grundgedanke war es, alle Momente der Komposition - und diese sind grundsatzlich welche der Bewegung bzw. Veranderung - in je vier verschiedenen Formungen zu reprasentieren, entsprechend der vier beteiligten Instrumente. So kommt jedem der Interpreten die Rolle eines Solisten zu, bei gleichzeitiger Einbindung in eine ubergreifende Ordnung, welche selbst wiederum in sich die Idee der polyphonen Aufspaltung tragt. Diese Polyphonie vollzieht sich auch auf der zeitlichen Ebene; der uberwiegende Verzicht auf einheitliche Taktierung intendiert ein streckenweise asynchrones Spiel, bei dem die individuelle Auslegung des Zeitverlaufes vorrangig ist, nicht die gemeinsame Fixierung durch ein ubergeordnetes metrisches Raster. So entsteht vielleicht ein Bild - von vier Reisenden, die zwar die gleichen Orte ansteuern, jedoch verschiedene Wege und Tempi wahlen, sich gelegentlich treffen, einige Schritte gemeinsam gehen, dann wieder trennen... Commissioned by the first Sibelius Conductor's Competition held in Helsinki in May 1995, as an obligatory piece to be rehearsed by all the competitors, Arena was performed in its totality at the annual Avanti! Chamber Orchestra's festival in Porvoo (Finland). Thematic thinking has never been a main feature in Lindberg's music, but here horizontal lines (one would not yet dare to call them melodies) gain some independence, for example in ornamental figures and in the intense cello solo around the middle of the piece. Arena also reveals some clearly new material - Lindberg has talked about Beethoven-like formal thinking, referring to a passage where the sense of movement seems to accelerate to an extreme so that finally one perceives only a motionless surface. Another new element - which was already used to some extent at the warmly hovering ending of Aura - is the almost romantic sound world and the suspension of the harmonies in the final climax, which can make one think of Mahler and Berg, or Lindberg's grand predecessor and compatriot, Sibelius. This is the Score, published by Chester Music; the duration of the pieces is approximately 16 minutes.
