Ein Liebespaar, unter deren Gier der Boden nachgibt und deren Lust zu Treibholz wird: dies ist das Herz von Hans Thills Gedicht Paradox und stellt den ersten Moment der Inspiration fur Christian Jost dar, diesem Text musikalische Gestalt zu verleihen. Die reduzierte Sprache des Gedichts, seine surreale erotische Welt, eroffnet Raume, in denen Satze zu Romanen und einzelne Worter zu endlosen Linien werden. Kompositorisch hat dies fur Jost nicht nur die Moglichkeit geschaffen, eine Geschichte hinter der Geschichte zu erzahlen, sondern auch jedes einzelen Wort in Klange einzuschweissen, deren Richtung er bestimmt. Folgerichtig ist demnach im Text und nicht an ihm entlang komponiert worden. Was bedeutet: der ohnehin zerschnittenen Sprache wurde eine weitere Ebene hinzugefugt, indem die jeweiligen Textschwerpunkte in verschiedene Klangbilder gefasst wurden, deren Summe dann die Dramaturgie des Ganzen bestimmt hat. Dadurch haben sich grossere atmosplarische Unterschiede und Spannungen ergeben, als das sehr lyrische Gedicht vermuten liesse. So aber konnte der Komponist eine Dichte an Ausdruck und Intensitat entwickeln, die bereits im Text enthalten sind, auch wenn er sich in ein lyrisches Gewand verkleidet hat.

Das Stuck stellt fur mich einen von verschiedenen Versuchen dar, aus einem streng punktuellen Musikdenken herauszufinden, mit dem ich mich seit meinem Studium bei Luigi Nono identifiziert hatte und dem ich auf meine eigene Weise treu zu bleiben entschlossen war, besonders in jener Zeit, als sich die sogenannte Avantgarde mehr und mehr auf surrealistische Kompromisse mit der burgerlichen Bequemlichkeit einzulassen schien. Die Besetzung - Klarinette, Bratsche und Schlagzeug (Marimbaphon mit Almglocken, Becken, Pauke und Bongos) - gewahrleistete eine homogene Ausgangsbasis der instrumentalen Mittel, von wo aus einerseits eine Art Klang-Gestik - das heisst enger oder weiter verzweigte Tonfigurationen - sich entwickeln liess, wahrend andererseits die Klangdifferenzierung nach innen weiter getrieben werden konnte bis hinein in die bewusstgemachte Anatomie des entstehenden (geblasenen, geschlagenen, geriebenen, gestrichenen, gezupften, getupften usw.) Tones. Zwischen diesen beiden Gegensatzen - Verflussigung des punktuell Gedachten hier und seiner Versteinerung beziehungsweise inneren Aufbrechung, Offnung dort - bewegt sich diese Musik: Gegensatze, die ich in spateren Werken bis in radikale Extreme weitergetrieben habe, wahrend hier das Ganze noch einem eher abstrakt-spielerischen Gesamtcharakter verpflichtet bleibt. (Helmut Lachenmann, 1989) Trio fluido , noch vor dem Schlagzeugsolostuck Interieur I, meinem Opus 1, entstanden, gehort einer Schaffensphase an, die noch streng strukturalistisch gepragt war, in der also ausschliesslich am akustischen Material orientierte Beziehungen und Entwicklungen kompositorisch gesteuert wurden. Was immer in diesem Stuck an Spielerischem einerseits, an Verfremdung und Klangzersetzung andererseits zu finden ist, ergab sich aus der Anwendung von solchen immanent orientierten Gesetzmassigkeiten, war also nirgends Gegenstand von expressiver Spekulation. Formal hat man es mit einer vielfach gebrochenen, aber insgesamt zugleich steigenden und fallenden Kurve zu tun: Auf dem Hintergrund scheinbar lose aufgereihter Abschnitte kehren sich mehr und mehr extreme Materialeigenschaften hervor, schliessen sich zusammen, bewirken insgesamt eine Zuspitzung, die umschlagt in den Kontrast eines statischen, durch innere Fluktuationen belebten Feldes. Dieses zerfasert sich seinerseits bis zum Schluss, wobei hinter den Tonfiguren die Gerauschkomponenten, hinter diesen die Erfahrung von der korperlichen Beschaffenheit des klingenden Stoffes und dahinter die auf solche Weise entleerte Zeit freigelegt, bewusstgemacht und in den musikalischen Zusammenhang eingegliedert wird. Strukturelles Musizieren: Das ist eine paradoxe Vorstellung. In Trio fluido entdeckt und nutzt die Musik selbst diesen Widerspruch. Mit der zunehmenden Auflosung (und zugleich der instrumentaltechnischen Ausuferung im Schlagzeug) schalen sich jene andere Materialwahrnehmung und daran gebundene Expressivitat heraus, die in meinen spateren Werken, zuerst in temA, Air und Klangschatten Ausgangshaltung bedeuteten, um die Reflexion der Bedingungen des Horens und Musizierens ins Horen selbst mit einzubeziehen. De Algunos Canciones de Juan de la Cruz. This work was commissioned by the BBC for the 10th anniversary of the BBC Northern Singers in 1975. 'Dos Coros is a setting for voices of two poems by the 16th century Spanish mystic St John of the Cross. St John is widely considered to be the greatest of the Spanish mystic poets, because he comes closest to expressing what is usually considered to be inexpressible - mystical experience. His poetry is all about the intense excitement of the union with God, but, paradoxically, the word God is rarely used, and not at all in the two poems set here. Another paradox is that he is able to express great serenity by employing the imagery of rushing water, flight and even drunkenness. If mystical experience is near impossible to convey in words, then maybe it is natural that many composers have taken up the challenge of conveying it in their own medium.' Geoffrey Burgon.

This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Möhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.Dit werk is geschreven in opdracht van dr. Robert Oertli uit het Zwitserse Möhlin. Het is een vereenvoudigde versie van een eerdere compositie: Spirit of the Sequoia. De muziek is ge nspireerd op de wijze waarop mensen hun voordeel doen met tegenslag vaak komen we er sterker uit. Sparke gebruikte de Californische sequoiaboom als metafoor voor dit basisidee. Programme Note During the composition of my tenth string quartet a flower-name, host-tidlos, came to my mind - and it would not me leave again. [hosttidlos is actually autumn crocus in English, but the composer prefers harvest-timeless, to maintain some of the associations of the Danish flower-name, red.] The paradoxical union of a seasonal time (harvest) and no-time-at-all was a good fit to the sections of the work that I had composed at that time, and I decided to tentatively stick to that title for the work-in-progress, and now, having finished the piece, I can say that is is still a fitting title - and it stands. Enough about the title, I will go on to describe themusic, a somewhat more precarious project. My tenth string quartet is probably the most basic string quartet that I have composed: melodically - and in sound - it employs the naturally based overtones and undertones (perceived at major and minor, respectively), and rhythmically it is based on growth, on the principles of the Golden Section, and the structure itself contrasts abundance and exuberance with sections of immobility and contemplation. However, Melos, melody, is definitely the dominating aspect of my STRING QUARTET NO. 10: behind even the most rhythmically complex or pure sonoric sections lies a firm - if hidden - basis of melodic or polyphonic ideas. The work was composed in 2004-2005 for the Kroger Quartet.

Aber naturlich: Kulturgeschichte ist ein Differenzierungsprozess, und so finden wir zur Zeit unserer europaischen Klassiker den Vorstoss der Musik zu ihrer ,,Autonomie - ihrer offiziellen Scheidung von dem Metier der Dichter. (Noch 1739 hatte Mattheson in seinem Vollkommenen Capellmeister von jedem Musiker ,,Gewandtheit in der Dicht-Kunst und genaueste Kenntnis der Verslehre verlangt.)Seit dieser Scheidung sind nun die Musiker sehr eifrig damit beschaftigt, eine autonome Grammatik und Syntax der ,,Tonkunst, wie die Musik jetzt genannt wird, zu entwickeln, wahrend in der Dichtung - besonders naturlich in der experimentellen, von Jean Paul und Mallarme bis zu Joyce und Celan - gerade das ,,Musikalische in der Poesie gesucht wird. Hierunter ist oft der Wunsch verborgen, die Verhartung, welche die Wortsprache durch ihre begriffliche Fixierung - extrem in der Wissenschaft! - erfahrt, wieder aufzuheben und sie in einen ,,musikalischen Zustand von Unbestimmtheit, von Offenheit zuruck zu versetzen.Oberflachlich betrachtet entwickeln sich die beiden Kunste in der Moderne also auseinander; eine Beruhrung zwischen ihnen wird immer schwieriger. Zu gross die Gefahr, dass die muhsam errungene Autonomie der einen wieder der Ubermacht der andern geopfert wird! Entweder wird die Musik, wenn sie schwach ist, zu blosser Illustration und Stimmungskulisse; oder sie verschlingt in ihrer klanglichen und zeitlichen Ausformung den eigenen Klang und Rhythmus der Dichtung.Manche Musiker haben in den letzten Jahrzehnten dieses Problem noch verinnerlicht und eine Art Bilderverbot auch innerhalb der Musik aufgestellt: Gestik, Expressivitat, Assoziationsfahigkeit der musikalischen Strukturen wurden unterdruckt. Ich halte das fur ein neurotisches Verhalten und ausserdem fur irrefuhrend. Es gibt schon seit jeher auch eine musikalische Semantik - das vergessen manche vor lauter Syntax und Grammatik; und es ist kein Grund einzusehen, warum in der Situation der Autonomie nicht musikalische und sprachliche Semantik in eine neue Art von Verhaltnis treten konnten. In der Bach-Kantate, im Schubert-Lied, in der Wagnerischen Leitmotivik waren das 1:1-Losungen; aber schon Wagner hat gezeigt, dass man diese Identitat auch dialektisch aufsprengen kann.Und wie erst in der Vielsprachigkeit der heutigen Moderne! In meiner Oper Stephen Climax habe ich den Hauptpersonen des Ulysses von James Joyce bestimmte - historisch ortbare - Musiksprachen zugeteilt (welche jeweils wieder bestimmte intervallische und rhythmische Struktureigenschaften zeigen, welche ihrerseits wieder seriell oder statistisch geordnet sind - es geht bis ins kleinste Detail ganz ,,autonom zu!!); der Kosmos unserer europaischen Musikgeschichte wird sowohl dem Kosmos der Joyceschen Figuren (ihrerseits ,,geschichtstrachtig!) wie auch dem aktuellen musikalischen Bewusstsein zugeordnet, aber eben oft auch uber Kreuz, paradox, mehrschichtig, mehrdeutig ... Die Tatsache, dass diese spezifische Moglichkeit einer neuartigen Einheit von Sprache und Musik von den berufenen Musikologen noch kaum bemerkt worden ist, zeigt nicht nur deren Langsamkeit, sondern auch die Dominanz des ,,bildlosen Denkens in der - jetzt abgelaufenen - Phase der Neuen Musik.In meinen Holderlin lesen-Stucken ging es mir darum, Wege zu finden, die gewaltigen Sprachstrukturen Holderlins so in die zeitliche Form der Musik zu integrieren, dass sie Funktionen der musikalischen Form ubernehmen, ohne in ihrer Eigenkraft (sowohl akustisch wie auch im Sinne expressiver ,,Deutung) im geringsten geschmalert zu werden. Das hiess zunachst: Sprechen, nicht singen! - Aber das wurde nur bedeuten, dass es nicht um die Musikalisierung von Text geht; ebenso wichtig ist es, dass es auch nicht um melodramatisch ,,erzahlende Musik geht. Sondern: Zwei autonome Kunste durchdringen sich auf diaphane Weise, ohne sich zu uberformen oder auszuloschen; es handelt sich um einen Dialog, nicht um eine Vereinnahmung durch Hierarchisierung.Ein weiteres Thema, das in der musikalischen Diskussion der letzten Jahrzehnte zu kurz gekommen ist und deswegen jetzt neu am Horizont erscheint, ist die Rhetorik. Inwieweit kann musikalische Form nicht nur logisch bzw. syntaktisch, sondern auch rhetorisch verstanden werden? Rhetorik und Satztechnik z.B. hangen zusammen. Ich kann diese Problematik (die ich in meinem vierteiligen, abendfullenden Shir Hashirim ,,auskomponiert habe) hier nur andeuten.Musik steht zwischen Zahl und Wort; sie hat an beidem teil. So konnte sie das Zentrum der ,,Sieben Freien Kunste in alten Zeiten bilden ... (Heinrich Schutz sagte, dass sie zu diesen - also zu den mathematisch-astronomischen und den literarischen Kunsten - wie die ,,Sonne zu den Planeten sich verhalte.) Mir scheint, dass wir die Komposition seit 50 Jahren zu einseitig nur von der Zahl her definieren; sie hat geschichtlich ebenso viel mit Sprachstruktur zu tun. Wir konnen Neuland gewinnen, wenn wir als heutige Musiker dies neu durchdenken.Es handelt sich hier um meinen dritten Versuch einer Annaherung an das Problem einer ,,Verzeitlichung der Holderlinschen Texte d.h. einer Moglichkeit, diese Texte in einer Performance darzustellen: da die Musik das eigentliche Element der zeitlichen Darstellung ist, werden die Holderlinschen Worte mit Tonen konfrontiert.Im Fall von denn wiederkommen geht es um neun Zeilen aus Holderlins Patmos-Hymne. Je eine solche Zeile wird einem Formabschnitt der Musik zugeordnet (das Stuck ist also, wie meine Lo-Shu-Stucke, neunteilig). Die betreffende Zeile erklingt nicht nur einmal, sondern wird, in der gleichen Weise wie auch das musikalische Material, nach einem chaotischen Repetitionsprinzip mehrfach wiederholt.Auffallig ist ferner, dass fur jeden der neun Teile ein von einem der vier Quartettspieler festgehaltener ,,Grundton gewahlt wurde; durch diese orgelpunktartige Wirkung wird jeder der neun Teile zusammengehalten, und der Horer kann die langsame Bewegung der Grossform im unmittelbaren Horprozess mitvollziehen.Die neun Satze von Holderlin lauten:1. Furchtlos gehen die Sohne der Alpen uber den Abgrund weg auf leicht gebaueten Brucken...2. Sie horen ihn und liebend tont es wieder von den Klagen des Manns...3. Im goldenen Rauche bluhte schnell aufgewachsen mit Schritten der Sonne, mit tausend Gipfeln duftend, mir Asia auf, und geblendet...4. Gegangen mit dem Sohne des Hochsten, unzertrennlich, denn es liebte der Gewittertragende die Einfalt des Jungers...5. Wenn aber stirbt alsdenn, an dem am meisten die Schonheit hing...6. Eingetrieben war wie Feuer in Eisen das, und ihnen ging zur Seite der Schatten des Lieben. Drum sandt er ihnen den Geist und freilich bebte das Haus und die Wetter Gottes rollten ferndonnernd...7. Uber die Berge zu gehn allein, wo zwiefach erkannt, war einstimmig und gegenwartig der Geist...8. Und hier ist der Stab des Gesanges, niederwinkend, denn nichts ist gemein. Die Toten wecket er auf...9. Denn wiederkommen sollt es, zu rechter Zeit. Berserkers were special warriors common to the Vikings and the ancient Celtic tribes who would work themselves into a frenzy with mead, mushrooms and hyperventilation to achieve performances of ferocious courage in battle. Although deadly in combat, the berserking process was paradoxically a suicidal one since, having lost their senses, they were vulnerable to a more stealthy attack. The initial burst of inspiration for this work came in 1989 after watching a soccer game in which Celtic Glasgow turned in a characteristically passionate, frenzied but ultimately futile display against Partizan Belgrade. But whatever the genesis of the piece, it is essentially abstract. The relationship between soloist and orchestra changes from section to section. In the opening fast music they are in argument and opposition most of the time, each striving to dominate. In the slow middle section the piano is very much to the fore and in the final quick section they become equal partners.

Earth and Sky was commissioned by the BBC for the Proms 2000 season. In keeping with the millennial theme, a work presenting a vision of the future was requested. Trying to be helpful, the BBC provided me with the predictions of various pundits, but their ideas seemed dizzyingly contradictory. Then the simple thought struck me that however varied and complex the answers, the big questions will always remain the same. We may now have a map of the human genome, but how to use the map? How shall I know where I should go? How may I see the I that's me?As a musician I am hopeful that, no matter how the world develops, future generations will still come together to dance and sing and play. The mysterious power of music to bind us socially and inspire us individually seems to be built into our genes. So, a song of questions; a song about music---these were the ideas which I took to Vikram Seth, who had generously agreed to write the words for me. The resulting poem provided lots of inspiration. It is entirely monosyllabic, enabling considerable variety of rhythmic treatment. I love its permutations and its imagery of paradox and inversion and I have amused myself by playing similar games with the musical material. In his poem Mending Wall, the inspiration for this piece, Robert Frost famously says “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall.†Mending Time, composed for Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, explores the many meanings of walls in life, from barriers of safety, to murals upon which the art and history of people are transcribed. In Letter from Home, Philip Sparke has aimed aim to capture the emotions that can be experienced when away from home; a letter or phone call can bring both happy and sad emotions and music is perhaps unique in being able to express these subtle and paradoxical feelings. The calm opening leads to a reflective melody on clarinets and saxophones; but it is not long before the peaceful mood turns to turmoil, which eventually brings feelings of resignation in a calm chorale with a more positive mood.

Colonnade is James Matheson’s intriguing response to the Albany Symphony’s commission to create a work inspired by the NY State Board of Education Building, designed by the renowned architect Rafael Guastavino. Matheson explains that “A colonnade acts as a metaphor for the tension between knowledge and perception. The columns are the same height and equidistant from each other; while the mind understands this fully, there exists no place from which one can perceive this – the columns always appear to be of uneven height and spacing. If one then adds motion to perspective, identical columns acquire elasticity, and begin to change kaleidoscopically – they shrink, grow, become closer, and then further apart.†This structural paradox is given musical life in the outer sections of Colonnade, while the long, arching middle section is inspired by the vaulted ceiling of one of the building’s largest rooms, enhancing the structure’s spacious openness and lightness.Colonnade is inspired by Albany’s majestic New York State Board of Education Building, and written on a commission from the Albany Symphony Orchestra. It was an intriguing task, in part because in order to accept the commission I had to agree to write a work “inspired by†a building I had not yet seen. Thisproblem was compounded by the fact that, for me, the very notion of extra-musical inspiration is a complex one, particularly with respect to literary or visual sources. I generally find ideas and abstracted notions more generative of musical ideas than specific ones (a poem, an experience, a painting). So when I went to seeand tour the building, I sought to identify fundamental formal aspects of the building which I could process into musical ideas, and would then be linked to the building through a sense of formal relationship. In theend, two characteristics of the building stood out as noteworthy and undiminished by time (compared with, for instance, the building’s rotunda, which contains a series of quaintly outdated allegorical paintings): theexterior colonnade and a beautiful interior vaulted ceiling, designed by Rafael Guastavino.For me, a colonnade acts as a metaphor for the tension between knowledge and perception. We all know, for instance, that the columns are of the same height and are equidistant from each other. Nevertheless, while the mind understands this fully, it is also the case that there exists no place – no standpoint or viewpoint – anywhere in the universe – from which one can perceive this; the columns always appear to be of uneven height and spacing. If one then adds motion to perspective – a walk along the colonnade, for instance – the fixed, even, rigidly identical columns acquire elasticity, and begin to change kaleidoscopically – they shrink, grow, become closer, and then further apart. Further, the detail of the building’s façade behind the colonnadeshifts into and out of visibility, with different portions obscured by the columns from each vantage point. These considerations underlie the outer sections of Colonnade, in which a continuously repeated, continuously varied rising figure – suggestive of a column – dominates. The iterations of this elastic, evolvingfigure are interspersed with other music – suggestive of the building’s façade. The second feature of the building that caught my attention was the vaulted ceiling, designed by Guastavino,of one of the building’s largest rooms. The ceiling enhances the spaciousness of the room, giving it an openness and lightness that is quite captivating. Between the 1890s and World War II the axis of Paris - Prague was found to be incredibly attractive. Its attraction lay in sharing mutual political and social values and led to the demand of certain cultural and artistic unity. The aim of this book is to raise questions regarding the musical works of this period, and discuss which musical works show this 'affinity in choice'. During the course of the 20th century 'cultural polarities' started blurring, and paradoxically enough it was not one of the Slav countries, but Paris where Czech composers reinvented, through the Neo-Classical style ( mainly Stravinski's) their 'Eastern pole': light and archaic themes, a specific register of folk and trivial music, and the preference for creative spontaneity in compositions. Which features in the direction taken by Bohuslav Martinu can be regarded as typical of this tendency? What were the positions of the other Czech composers such as Leos Janacek, Alois Haba, Karel Husa, Jaroslav Jezek and others, and artists working in the musical, artistic or literal fields, for instance Arne Hosek, Milada Souckova, Jiri Kolar, Milan Slavicky, Milan Kundera, within this context? The analysis of these questions regarding the whole of the 20th century is completed with several so far unpublished or unknown sources.
