Uuno Klami (1900-1961) became one of the leading Finnish Modernists during the 1920s. His main genre was orchestral music, and he experimented widely with his orchestration, combining national themes with international trends. His studies took him to Paris and Vienna, and Parisian influences are particularly marked in his musical language. He admired the orchestral sound of Ravel and was also influenced by Stravinsky. His sonata in B flat minor for viola and piano was composed in 1920. Forgotten for long time, in 2016 the violist Eero Kesti took the demanding task of editing the very challenging manuscript full of unclear corrections. The sonata has impressionistic and romantic features and is surprisingly mature and original, considering the young age of the composer. The sonata is in three movements, and the duration is c. 21 minutes.

Racconto (Tale)/ Capri/ Cielo sereno (Clear sky)/ Tano/ Napolitango/ Luci della spiaggia (Beach lights)/ Fantasia mediterranea (Mediterranean fantasy)/ Una lacrima ridente (A smiling tear)/ Quartieri spagnoli/ Marcia dei pomodori (March of the tomatos)Being interested in certain aspects of popular music, I became aware of several similarities between popular Neapolitan melodies and the Argentinean tango. Napolitango is based on an imaginary journey to Naples and Buenos Aires. In retaining certain characteristics of the original music, Napolitango embodies an inspiration and an almost theatrically passionate character which is common to these two genres. The piece has been composed for the Parisian Festival Paris Banlieues Tango 2001.(S. Di Stefano).

The three piano sonatas by Joachim Raff (1822-1882), representing his three main creative phases, occupy a special position among his more than 100 piano pieces. They reflect a significant compositional aspiration whereas Raff otherwise frequently leans towards the salon-music genre in his piano music. Raff composed the early sonata op. 14 in 1844 after his first works were positively evaluated and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy had encouraged him to venture a career as a composer. The Fantasie-Sonate [Fantasy Sonata] in d minor op. 168, Raff wrote in 1871 at the height of his fame as one of Germany's then most-played composers. Its dedication to Camille Saint-Saens shows his opposition to the rampant German disapproval of France and its music representatives in the wake of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870/71. The second version of the sonata op. 14, composed in the fall of 1881, had only the opus number in common with the earlier version. In this late work Raff had created an entirely new sonata. ,,Beautifully presented on cream paper, with exceptional clarity and generous spacing. The Fantasie-Sonate in D minor Op. 168, in particular, is a masterpiece which manifests both considerable power and exquisite craftsmanship. (www.pianodao.com).

The title may be read as an indication of the key and genre, on the one hand, but also as an allusion to a slightly depressive mood, on the other hand. Mozart's Piano Sonata in A minor which may have been created in the Parisian street mentioned in the subtitle virtually serves as background for this little, yet somewhat tricky piano piece. There are no direct quotations, but the dissonant chord from bar 2 of the sonata in A minor hovers in the background. Mosaic-like, slightly dabbed sound elements are regularly interrupted by brief, strong beats. Ambitious performers who want to explore new playing techniques will enjoy this piece as much as the audience.
