The second volume continues with 43 compositions for the time of Holy Lent and Easter. For this time of year the new hymnal Gotteslob contains a great number of new songs. Therefore more than 20 pieces are commissioned renditions for this edition - for many songs they are even the first chorale arrangements overall. The collection presents some previously unknown pieces between baroque and present times. The pieces are quite easy to learn and take between two and five minutes playing time and are particularly suitable for the recessional and for the communion.

Since the two verifiable autographs of the offertory Misericordias Domini have been lost, for the present new critical edition Robert Munster was able to rely for the first time on the manuscript parts from the music of the Court of Munich which he discovered. These can be traced back to the material used for the first performance of the work in Munich in 1775 and hence they can also be traced back to the Munich autograph. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.4004000.

Heinrich Schutz's Osterdialog (Dialogo per la Pascua) SWV 443 for four voices and basso continuo is based on an episode from the Gospel of St John, in which the risen Jesus appears before Mary Magdalene in front of the empty grave. Schutz had also composed a setting of this scene shortly before in 1623 in his Auferstehungshistorie [Resurrection History]. For the first time this edition contains an attempt to reconstruct the extensive final chorus of the work, which is missing except for the basso continuo part, by Helmut Lauterwasser. This musical jewel by Schutz represents a valuable addition to the musical repertoire for Easter, which is smaller than the Passiontide repertoire. 20.443/05: full score without cover and without final chorus 20.443/06: choral score, only final chorus. Score available separately - see item CA.2044300.

The Freiburger Orgelbuch 2 is mainly aimed at semi-professional organists who are looking for challenging pieces with a clear liturgical use. All liturgical situations are provided for: ceremonial processions, music for the offertory and communion, meditative organ music, and pieces based on chorales for the major festivals of the church year. Besides a wide range of German and Austrian organ music, there is additional variety with selected works by French, English, Spanish, Italian, and American composers. The arrangement of the contents by country reflects the international scope of the book. There are short commentaries on the pieces, providing information on each composer and questions of registration. The selection offers a broad stylistic variety, ranging from toccatas to Romantic character pieces and Vesper voluntaries. The easy-to-medium level of difficulty will be particularly welcomed by semi-professional organists. But more experienced players will also find previously little-known treasures of the organ music repertoire in this edition. The Freiburger Orgelbuch 2 will surely become an important compendium for organ teaching because of its broad contents. Selected works can be heard on a CD in top-quality recordings on newly-built and historic instruments in the Archdiocese of Freiburg in the Lake Constance region (Constance, Hilzingen), and the area around Karlsruhe.
