Palestrina's Missa Paternoster is one of the masses by this composer that were published neither during his lifetime nor after his death. The work has come down to us in one single manuscript source from the collections of the Cappella Sistina in Rome, a copy transcribed by D. Brancadore in 1618.The mass is written on motifs from the ancient plainchant Pater noster melody from the mass liturgy, which underlays the movements in an admirable multiplicity of melodic forms. New counterpoints are repeatedly intertwined with the themes of the title melody over the course of the mass. Certain idiosyncrasies in the voice-leading and the austere sonorities that recall the late Netherlandish tradition give rise to the hypothesis that this is a relatively early work of Palestrina.Several decades ago, the Missa Paternoster was published by Breitkopf & Hartel in a performance edition prepared by Hermann Bauerle. The present edition is based on the copy of the work printed in the Choirbook 68 (Cappella Sistina) of the Biblioteca Vaticana in Rome. The poor condition of the source made it necessary to compare it with Haberl's Complete Edition as weil, after which two errors have to be corrected. Our edition cannot pretend to offer a definitive reading of the accidentals, since they are difficult to distinguish in the original. The work was transposed, as this seemed more appropriate to present-day choral practice. Finally, the note values were reduced by a half and the closing notes reproduced uniforrnly as longae. Palestrina's Missa ,,Pater noster occupies a distinguished position next to its better known, four-part fellow works. lt deserves this rank thanks to its dignified and broadly sweeping themes, the archaic loftiness of its sound, and the wealth of motivic work contained within it. We sincerely hope that this new edition will stimulate choirs to turn their attention once again to this rarely sung mass by the great Roman master.Rudolf Ewerhart,January 1962, Munster (Westf.).

With the publication of his hypnotic Pater noster, Carus proudly presents Jacek Sykulski as a new composer in the Carus Contemporary series. Whilst Sykulski has achieved worldwide success as Director of the Academic Choir at the University of Poznan and the Poznan Boys' Choir, as a composer he has remained a well-guarded secret until now. In his sacred compositions he combines in music the deeply Catholic-imbued tradition of his country with his own compositional technique, characterized by a tremendous vocal sensuousness of sound and a conscious use of tonality enriched by dissonance. His Pater noster was composed in 2009 and revised in 2015 for a performance by the RIAS Kammerchor in Berlin. The first section of this three-part work for eight-part choir (tenors and sopranos also split into three) begins with the invocation Pater noster homophonically in A minor. This then introduces the Gregorian liturgical melody of the Our Father canonically and aleatorically, like a contemplative congregational hymn. The middle section calls out Dein Reich komme in increasingly insistent rhythmic declamation, more demanding, with hypnotic repetitions and intensifications. In the last section, Sykulski returns to the opening harmonies, but now a semitone lower on A flat, followed by an intensification at the words sed libera nos a malo - and delivery us from evil once more; this ends unresolved in a diatonic cluster on A flat as the paradigm of our imperfect earthly existence. The eight-minute unaccompanied composition is extremely singable, impressive, and not difficult to master. The piece is suitable for use in the liturgy, as well as in concerts and competitions.

Henry Francis Lyte, 19th century Scottish minister and poet, wrote this hymn text during the last year of his life. The opening line of the hymn is misquoted from Luke 24:29, when the disciples meet the resurrected Jesus, but do not recognize him. They ask him to Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. The change to the singular pronoun gives the hymn its comforting, personal and emotional intimacy. Though Lyte wrote his own tune for the poem, the tune most associated with the text is Eventide by William Henry Monk. Monk, a composer, arranger, and editor wrote this tune for the hymns inclusion in Hymns Ancient and Modern, published in 1861. Be intentional to sing a tall, pure /a/ sound on the word abide. Also be mindful that the original Abide with me hymn melody should be primary with the prayerful Pater Noster providing its support. Overall, bear in mind the prayerful mood of the selection and mold the color of the tone accordingly. Schneider's Organ Symphony No. 1 is in the tradition of the French organ symphonies (Widor, Vierne, Durufle). With its general tendency from the desperate dark to the comforting bright, the symphony brings up the air of the praying and pleading of suffering people as a theme. The 'pater noster' as archetype of the prayer is cited in all movements.

This beautiful interpretation of the Pater Noster text by composer Nilo Alcala is a nice challenge for high school, collegiate, and professional-level choirs. Alcala sets each section of the prayer with intention. Complex compositional technique resulting in a sophisticated sound.

A beautiful vocal work of about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes in length transcribed for 8-part antiphonal trombone choir by Ralph Sauer, L.A. Philharmonic Principal Trombone. Handl's Pater Noster is not too difficult and would be appropriate for almost any level group including high school level. The range is conservative with an occasional high B-flat. Jacob Handl was an Austrian composer of Slovene descent, born in Ljubljana. Choirmaster to the Bishop of Olmutz 1579-1585, he lived thereafter in Prague as an organist.

Sir George Henschel's setting of the Pater noster (Our Father), was first published in 1913. The dedicatee, Sophie Weisse (1852-1945), was founder of Northlands, an all-girls school in Surrey, England. As well as George Henschel, Weisse counted many people of note among her circle of friends, including violinist Joseph Joachim, flautist Louis Fleury, and 'cellist Pablo Casals. She was the first to observe Donald Tovey's aptitude for music and took it upon herself to manage his education, all the way to Balliol College, Oxford.
