Paul Nitsche's 'Pflege der Kinder- und Jugendstimme', published in two volumes in 1952/1954, has been known to directors of children's choirs and teachers of singing for a long time. Now this standard work is available as a revised new edition in a new design and layout, consisting of the chapters 'Theoretischer Teil' [Theoretical Part] and 'Stimmbildungen am Lied' [Voice Training in Song]. While the first part deals with topics such as 'autonomy of the child's voice', 'breaking of the voice', 'breathing', 'sound generation', 'resonant chambers' and 'hummer', the second part contains a lot of exercises for the practical work with children from primary school age to the breaking of the voice. 'Exercises in song', 'Song vocalises' and 'Syllables for practising in shouting, singing and playing' are just a few examples from the varied material provided for voice training. It is the author's aim to exploit the possibilities of the voice in song without the song becoming a stereotyped and mechanically repeated voice training exercise. What is essential is that the subject matter is 'wrapped up' in the singing or playing activities in such a way that the children do not lose their joy and pleasure in singing.

This work was written for the Donaueschingen Musiktage of 1926 and given its first performance there together with Paul Hindemith's 'Konzertmusik' and Ernst Toch's 'Spiel' for wind band. Until a few years ago the score was thought to be lost. This first edition reproduces the original Version but it has been carefully extended so that it can be played by the usual combination of Instruments now found in a wind band. The work is suitable for advanced wind bands and those at the highest level, and is one of the first original compositions for this form of ensemble.Hans Gal was born in Vienna where he studied composition and musicology and then taught at the university. From 1929 until 1933 he was Director of the Musikhochschule in Mainz. He then had to return to Vienna and he emigrated to Edinburgh where he was a university lecturer and conductor. Joseph Haas was the teacher, Paul Hindemith the model of the director of many years' standing of the Frankfurter Musikhochschule. The Heitere Suite was created in 1945. After a slow introduction (quasi rezitativo) with a viola solo full of suspense, the first violins start playing a succinct, rhythmically accentuated theme dominat-ing the whole movement and appearing in many different forms. Lively intensifications and, not least, the occasional soloistic use of the instruments are giving colour to this work. A valu-able addition to our concert programmes of moderate modern style. Prayer is a short work written in honor of Paul Fromm's seventy-fifth birthday as part of a bouquet of compositions especially composed for the occasion and presented in a concert commemorating the event on January 22, 1982, by the Contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago, Ralph Shapey, music director. My notes for that evening read: I asked myself--how shall I celebrate this special day? The answer--compose a prayer. A wordless one... the horn is my voice. Bass clarinet, bassoon, and timpani form a low choir supporting, commenting, punctuating. From their midst the clarinet takes flight. In my mind, it assumes the role of the innocent village boy whose whistle, according to an old Jewish tale, opened the gates of heaven.  .

Bethlehem Carol was the result of a commission in 2000 from the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The request came from the Cathedrals music director, Russell Jackson; he had very much liked the Italian Fable cum Violin Concerto (The Big Sword and the Little Broom) I had written in 1997 for the Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra. Russell chose the text by Charles Coffin, a French poet and educator whose hymn verses were often translated into English. My approach toward setting the poem was my usual one; that is, to translate literally the words into music (note the dips into the minor mode for the cave of Bethlehem and the child of poverty.) But most of all, I wanted to capture the sense of joy and peace brought by the arrival of the Christ Child.Bethlehem Carol was the result of a commission in 2000 from the Cathedral Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. A young boy and his faithful dog face a big decision. Dale Kingston isn’t your average boy. He saved the Conn musical instrument factory from burning to the ground in Book One of the Adventures with Music series. In Dog Tags, Book Two in the Adventures with Music series, Dale faces a big decision: World War II is in full swing, and he wants to do his patriotic duty. But Dale is only twelve years old. How can he help America? His dog, Scout, provides the answer when his master hears about the U.S. Army’s Dogs for Defense program. Dale loves his pet, but he knows Scout would do his country proud by serving as an animal courier for American troops at war. Should he enroll Scout in the program? Along the way, Dale begins trumpet lessons as his school forms a band for the first time. He loves the Andrews Sisters and their hot new song, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy. His dream is to play that solo for the popular trio. Could that dream come true? Dog Tags, the second volume in the Adventures with Music series, answers these questions and more in a story told from the heart that will inspire young readers everywhere. Excerpt from the book... The instruments arrive and the students have their first band rehearsal, but Dale has his mind on other things.... Grandpa knelt down and looked directly into Dale's eyes. This is a very brave thing you're doing for your country son. You're making the biggest sacrifice any boy can make by volunteering your dog for the military. Breaking free from his grandfather, Dale ran to Scout and gave him one last deep hug. He whispered, Do your best, Scout. I love you!  Paul Kimpton grew up in a musical family and was a band director in Illinois for 34 years. The symposium brought together 288 participants from 17 nations and six continents to learn of each other’s work, establish collaborations and professional networks, and shape new directions for research in this important area of music education in Williamsburg, Virginia, from February 18-21, 2015. The four keynote addresses and 37 papers published in this volume document music assessment practice and the measurement and evaluation of music learning across the world in local, state, and national contexts at all levels. The attendees also attended special work sessions to discuss the key questions of the symposium, and their discussions are summarized in this collection. As music educators across the world come to terms with increased expectations for accountability of learning in music, the scholars and practitioners who have contributed to this volume provide insight to guide their work.About the EditorsTimothy S.
