With a pristine quote from the classic hymn tune BREAD OF LIFE, this piece raises the curtain on a winsome invitation to the Lord's Supper. Mercy and forgiveness draw the seeker in lovely melodic strains that rise and fall like a prayer as the anthem unfolds. A lush and satisfying chorus showcases the timbre of the choir while passionately calling the faithful to “Bring every burden, bring every need... to the table of peace.†Highly recommended!

Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder in a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstacy Give all you have been, or could be. --Barter from Love Songs (1918) by Sara Teasdale Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was an American poet whose short, personal lyrics are noted for their classical simplicity and quiet intensity. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri and traveled to Chicago as a young woman, where she grew acquainted with Harriet Monroe and the literary circle around Poetry. Teasdale wrote seven books of poetry in her lifetime and received public admiration for her well-crafted lyrical poetry which centered on a woman's changing perspectives of beauty, love, life, and death. Jacob Narverud (b. 1986) is an American composer, arranger, and conductor. A native Kansan, Jacob is the Founder/Artistic Director of the Tallgrass Chamber Choir, a professional ensemble of musicians from across the Great Plains. Dr. Narverud is a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conferences as well as an active guest conductor/clinician for choral festivals and all-state choirs across the United States. Written in memory of the composer's mother, Will Todd's Songs of Peace is a six-movement work about love and loss. Two of the movements are scored for upper voices. Although it is not a conventional Requiem, it might be appropriate in a memorial context, butshould by no means be confined to it: in many ways it is a very 'life-affirming' work, characterised by ToddÂ’s recognisable jazz-infused harmonic language, memorable melodies, and powerful and personal texts. Songs of Peace is designed as a work which may be performed complete, as separate movements (two of which are scored for upper voices) or as a selection. It can be accompanied by piano alone (as written, embellished or extemporised - chord symbols are supplied where appropriate) or jazz trio (piano, bass and drums - parts available separately at www.boosey.com/SongsOfPeace).

Personal Note My high school band director, Clarence F. Wroblewski, died on November 24, 2018. In the 1950s, he was a pioneer in the field of public school instrumental music in Baltimore City. He was my mentor and my dear friend. It was his guidance and encouragement that set my young life's course on the path of music. Performance Notes Ceremony of Peace contains only the notes of the ascending pentatonic scale: Bb, C, Eb, F, and G. The middle voice written for Oboe, Tenor Sax and Horn uses the note D at cadences. The character of the music should give the impression of ceremonial music performed on primitive instruments. The Tom-Tom parts are exactly the same as the Snare Drum and Bass Drum parts. The director may decide whether to use one or the other or both. If Snare Drum with snares off is used, try it with mallets instead of drum sticks. If a Bass Drum is used be certain that it does not overpower the band. The director may choose to turn it on its side and muffle it with a towel. In the Percussion 2 part Sleigh Bells may double with the Tambourine to add a primitive, ceremonial sound. The Clarinet part may be doubled an octave higher in bands where this is possible.Personal NoteMy high school band director, Clarence F. Wroblewski, died on November 24, 2018. A commission by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West allowed Ewazen to consider the ten years following the events of 9/11/2001, resulting in A Time of Strife, a Time of Peace. The first movement considers the long wars and the losses entailed through soaring lyrical lines above a rhythmic, pounding accompaniment, as Ewazen puts it. The second movement is a bittersweet celebration on the death of the perpetrator and a future of joy, peace, and life. Ewazen says, A burst of joyous energy bringing this chapter in our history to a close..

Be At Peace takes its lyrics from Max Ehrmann's classic poem Desiderata, the title of which can roughly be translated from Latin as needful things. The poem reads as a set of advice to a younger person on how to best live their life. This setting is appropriate for any time of the year, but perhaps especially at graduations, baptisms, confirmations, or any event signifying a life transition. My hope is that the simple voicing with minimal divisi allows the piece to work for varied-sized choirs and choirs of all ages.
