Full Score-Full orchestra score for Per Nørgård's Symphony No. 5 (1987-90 rev.1991). Manuscript copy. Programme note: My 5th Symphony was commissioned by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and premiered on December 6th 1990 by and dedicated to the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. After the premiere in 1990 I decided to revise the beginning (and only the beginning) of the work. The first pages of the score were discarded and about 20 seconds of new music was written in the summer of 1991. The new and final versionwas premiered on 1st of May 1992. The symphony progresses without pauses between movements often in several layers of tempo with mutual ´golden section´proportions. The listener´s experience of form in the work will therefore depend on the directions of his own attention. But so far as overall divisions are concerned four sections (perhaps five) - running into each other - can be traced: an expansive cascading introduction a kind of scherzo an chaconne-like adagio and a kind of finale again with the phenomenon of ´cascades´ as a main idea. However as the course is from time to time thrown into chaos by convulsive twitching and crises other experiences of form are opened out within a spectrum from wild to cautious from dramatic to contemplative in a universe of tempi which can suggest the title of a book of poems by the Danish Michael Strunge (1958-1986): ´Velocity of life.´ A listener described the symphony as “a walk with a fire-breathing dragon” and a reviewer described it with words like “a pacifist in times of war”. Anyway words and programme note are – as Carl Nielsen said about titles – only “road signs” for personal experiences in the area of music itself. Per Nørgård

Programme note: The first movement opens with sculptural rising and falling scales. Visually the sound may call to mind, say, spirals or ziggurats (temple towers). Brisk music leads to the climax of the movement.The second movement is slow and sensually melodious and has three interludes of greater timbral melodic action. The third movement begins very restlessly but towards the climax the tempo gradually begins to accelerate. An oscillating pianissimomurmur ends the movement - and the symphony. The Reformation Symphony was composed in 1830 for the 300th anniversary of the Confessio Augustana, the founding of the Lutheran confession of faith. In the fourth movement, Mendelssohn quotes, elaborates and varies artfully the Luther-chorale Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott [God is our fortress], erecting a musical monument to the reformer Martin Luther. After an initial confl icting reception, the Reformation Symphony meanwhile is established fi rmly in the concert repertoire. EB 8058 is intended for performances with organ. It can also be used for the preparation of the chorus and soloists for performances with orchestra.With regard to the anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, this version for solos, choir and organ by Torsten Sterzik originated to pave the Reformation Symphony's way into the church as well, restoring the text to Luther's chorale in the fourth movement and additionally including the third movement, its arioso solos being sung by a soprano and a tenor solo.

More Classical Highlights is the follow-up to Classical Highlights, a collection featuring arrangements of classical themes dating from the 17th century up to the19th century. The parts are quite easy and attractively written, but the arrangements stay as faithful as possible to the original works. Baroque music is represented with two highlights: the well-known Canon by Pachelbel may well be the most performed 17th century composition. The 19th century features in three famous works: the lively Marche Militaire No 1 by the Austrian composer Schubert originates from 3 Marches Militaires for four-handed piano. The Can Can from Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld) is the best-known separately performed piece by the operetta composer Offenbach. Following this exciting dance music there is the beautiful, lofty Largo theme from the second movement of Czech composer Dvorákâ??s From the New World Symphony. La musique baroque est représentée par deux oeuvres toujours appréciées. Tre Volti (Three Faces) has been commissioned by the renowned “New Trombone Collectiveâ€, exclusively existing of top-trombonists from the Dutch symphony orchestras. The world première was given by the commissioners and took place in “De Doelen†in Rotterdam on april 16th 2011 - during the “Slide Factory†- European Trombone Festival.The composer aimed to illustrate 3 different aspects of the instrument in as many movements. Effetti e Tecniche (Effects and Techniques) displays a large amount of specific spectacular and acrobatic possibilities and also various colors and sounds by using different mutes. It contains many “glissandi†as well as clusters with semi tones andquarter tones, all being “typical†for the trombone indeed. The Lamento Lirico (Lyrical Lamento) combines the rather serious and noble voice of the trombone with an aspect which not automatically is connected to that instrument: the melodical character. The overall atmosphere of this movement is somewhat sad and strained and refers to the many beautiful but rather dark passages in the orchestral and opera literature where the trombone section as such is used ...The final movement is called Sonata Antica (Antique Sonata) and is directly inspired by two “sonatas†for 3 and 4 trombones by Daniel Speer (1636 - 1707). It illustrates the “historical†dimension of the trombone: indeed it was the only brass instrument being able to play chromatically - many centuries before all other brass instruments - thanks to the unique slide system which even during the Middle Ages was applicable already. The antiphonal position, the dialoguing motives and the “neo-early-baroque†idiom really pay homage to Daniel Speer: he composed a certain number of pieces for brass instruments indeed and the composer used thematic material from his Sonatas in d and a in various ways, thus concluding this varied composition in a festive way. Das LAMENTO LIRICO enthält die eher ernsten Töne, welche die Posaune in der Regel spielt und kombiniert diese mit einem Aspekt, der doch eher ungewöhnlich für dieses Instrument ist: einem melodischen Charakter. Der dritte Satz - SONATA ANTICA - wurde unmittelbar von zwei der bekanntesten Sonaten vonDaniel Speer (1636-1701) inspiriert. Hier geht es um die historische Dimension der Posaune: Tatsächlich war sie das erste Blechblasinstrument, auf dem man - Jahrhunderte vor allen anderen - schon chromatisch spielen konnte. Tre Volti (Trois Visages) est une commande du prestigieux New Trombone Collective, composé des meilleurs trombonistes des orchestres symphoniques néerlandais. La première mondiale, assurée par la formation dédicataire, a eu lieu le 16 avril 2011 au Doelen de Rotterdam dans le cadre du “Slide Factoryâ€, le festival européen consacré aux trombones.Le compositeur souhaitait illustrer trois aspects de l’instrument en trois mouvements. Effetti e Tecniche (Effets et Techniques) évoque les nombreuses possibilités acrobatiques du trombone, ainsi que l’emploi de sourdines pour obtenir différents timbres et couleurs. Ce mouvement développe de nombreux glissandi ainsi quedes mesures avec des demi-tons et quart de tons, des effets “typiques†du trombone. Le Lamento Lirico (Complainte Lyrique) tisse une trame l’empreinte mélodique et aux motifs plutôt nobles et sérieux, mettant en évidence l’une des caractéristiques que l’on n’associe pas toujours avec cet instrument. Le climat général de ce mouvement, quelque peu triste et tendu, fait référence aux nombreuses oeuvres orchestrales et opératiques où les trombones se voient attribuer des passages sombres et mélancoliques.Le dernier mouvement, intitulé Sonata Antica, s’inspire directement de deux sonates de Daniel Speer (1636-1707) pour trois et quatre trombones respectivement. Il illustre la dimension historique du trombone, qui était d’ailleurs, au Moyen ge, le seul cuivre capable de jouer chromatiquement gr ce au système de coulisse, et ce plusieurs siècles avant les autres cuivres. La forme antiphonale, les motifs de dialogue et l’idiome “ancien néo-baroque†rendent hommage Daniel Speer. Le compositeur de Tre Volti a emprunté, sa manière, plusieurs thèmes des sonates en Ré et en La pour conclure joyeusement cette composition aux multiples facettes.

This unusual concert work, commissioned by the concert band ?Harmonie Concorde? from Sanem in Luxembourg, is built on two basic ideas: the evolution of the economic and social context of this Luxembourg city with its strong mining industry and the European concept, which is clearly present in this very small but prosperous country with its many European institutes. This is musically expressed in a few quotes from the European hymn Ode to Joy, the closing of Beethoven?s Ninth Symphony and from the Te Deum by Charpentier ? widely known as the signature tune for Eurovision broadcasts. A work of true unity.Aan dit concertwerk - geschreven voor de Harmonie Concorde uit Sanem in Luxemburg - liggen twee basisideeën ten grondslag. Als eerste de sociaal-economische context van het stadje: de mijnbouw heeft decennialang mensen uit diverselanden aangetrokken, met name Portugal. Dit wordt ge llustreerd door de verwerking van een authentiek arbeidslied uit dat land. De tweede pijler is de Europese gedachte die in Luxemburg duidelijk aanwezig is. Dit komt muzikaal totuiting in een dynamische thematiek en citaatjes uit Ode an die Freude van Beethoven en het Te Deum van Charpentier - de herkenningstune voor Eurovisie-uitzendingen. Concordia, een werk dat verschillende elementenin zich verenigt, staat symbool voor eenheid.Zwei Bilder des Landes Luxemburg bilden die Grundlage dieses ungewöhnlichen Werkes: Zunächst beschreiben schöne, teilweise düstere Klänge die Bergbauregion Luxemburg und ihre vielen Gastarbeiter.Mit Zitaten aus Beethovens Ode an die Freude und Charpentiers Te Deum wird Luxemburg als Sitz einiger wichtiger europäischer Institutionen vorgestellt.
