Score Parties. Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. When Beethoven wrote these three quartets he was 15 years old and a composition student of Christian Gottlob Neefe in Bonn. They reveal a strong Mozartian influence while the brilliant piano writing already gives a sense of the mature Beethoven. He may conceivably have written the works for the wealthy Mastiaux family in Bonn, as he gave piano lessons to one of the daughters and the other three siblings played violin, viola and violoncello. The sole source for the quartets is the autograph score which contains many overwritings that shed light on the works' original conception and possible alternative readings. Although Beethoven never published the pieces in his lifetime and is not known to have performed them, he reused their melodic and thematic material in later compositions. Beethoven preserved the autograph score to the end of his days ? perhaps an indication that the quartets meant a great deal to him. The first edition was published by Artaria in Vienna one year after his death, albeit with the pieces in a different order and with many errors in the musical text. Bärenreiter's scholarly performing edition of the Piano Quartets WoO 36 is edited by the Italian pianist Leonardo Miucci, a specialist in the performance practice of keyboard music from this period. The edition not only presents the correct readings, it also sheds light on the young Beethoven's expressive notation and provides a plausible explanation for the distinction he made between dots and strokes to indicate staccato./ Répertoire / Quatuor pour Piano, Violon, Alto et Violoncelle

Hans Gáls Klavierquartett in A entstand 1926 als Auftrag des einarmigen österreichischen Pianisten Paul Wittgenstein (1987-1961), dem älteren Bruder des Philosophen Ludwig Wittgenstein komponiert. Seine Pianistenkarriere war beeinträchtigt nachdem Paul Wittgenstein seinen rechten Arm in einem Russlandfeldzug des 1. Schubert only took ten days to write his String Quartet in G major one of his truly monumental chamber music works. With its almost symphonic dimensions this late quartet is reminiscent of his greatString Quintet in C major. As divulged in a letter Schubert actually wanted to 'pave the way for the large symphony' with this quartet and several other chamber music works that he composed around the same time. Writtenin 1826 the quartet was not performed in public during the composer’s lifetime; and it was only published long after his death. This Urtext edition with its accompanying study edition is therefore based on the survivingautograph.

Ed Hughes' Secret Sky for Piano Quartet.Secret Sky was commissioned by the Schubert Ensemble's Chamber Music 2000 project and has been performed by school children in the south west of England and in the Purcell Room by music college students. The piece lasts 4 minutes and aims to create an evocative sound scape through pools of modal harmony created by a mix of piano repeating patterns and melodies in the 3 strings. As in all my work the ebb and flow of line is important to the development tensions and resolutions of the piece. The piece is probably suitable for players of the standard of at least Grade 6. Piano Quartets-C?est à peine imaginable aujourd?hui mais le public viennois de l?époque reçut le quatuor avec piano K. 478 de Mozart avec une certaine froideur sans doute notamment liée au caractère dramatique de la tonalité de sol mineur en particulier dans le premier mouvement auquel ce compositeur ne l?avait pas habitué. C?est la raison pour laquelle l?éditeur Hoffmeister refusa d?imprimer d?autres quatuors et Mozart ne composa qu?un unique autre quatuor le quatuor en Mi bémol majeur K. 493 alors qu?il avait prévu à l?origine d?en écrire une série de six. C?est très dommage car ces deux quatuors avec piano comptent parmi les joyaux de sa musique de chambre et continuent à ce jourde jouir de la faveur de tous.
