Piano Sonata Op. 1, New Rev.

When Christa Landon presented the first printed version of her edition of Joseph Haydn's Piano sonatas Haydn's sonata oeuvre was still overshadowed by the works of Mozart and Beethoven. Since then Haydn's sonatas have progressed from the teaching rooms to the concert halls and Landon's edition has played a crucial role in that process. The Haydn anniversary in 2009 is a welcome occasion to thoroughly revise this 'legendary' edition for over the course of more than forty years new sources have come to light and questions of authenticity have been resolved not least because the editorial principles for 18th-centurymusic have changed considerably. The new edition comprises all works of the previous Wiener Urtext edition plus the sonata Hob. XVI:16 edited by Landon along with the Sonata in F major which was rediscovered in Bozen a few years ago and attributed to Joseph Haydn. The new edition is published in four volumes the content of each volume being compatible with the volumes of the previous edition. Volumes 1 and 2 contain the early sonatas. Werke von 1961 bis 1979-The pieces in this edition are in a chronological and stylistic order. Fünf Stücke (1961) Triade (1962) and Elegie (1967) which Silvestrov retrospectively describes as 'lyrische Dodekaphonie' were composed in a short period inwhere he learned the musical language of the 20th century. The following sonatas (I-III 1972 1975 1979) are characterized - as per Silvestrov 'Identität der Stile'. The piano cycle Kitschmusik (1977) is one of the mostimpressive reference to his 'metaphorischen Stils' (V. Silvestrov). Irrespective of the different phases all pieces show his unique thinking and writing process. It is expressed in nuances of agogicism dynamics and tempi. Thepedal needs particular attention - the composer was convinced that it creates an overtone. Pieces from the 60s were reviewed and given with typical notes - just like Silvestrovs later period - for ex. «Je veux le composer tout à fait d?après le caractère de Mlle Rose». Voici ce que répondit Mozart à la question de savoir comment il allait concevoir l?Andante de sa Sonate en Ut majeur. Il avait fait la connaissance de Rosina Cannabich à Mannheim durant l?automne 1777. Composée à son intention, la Sonate K. 309 lui fut tout de suite présentée lors d?une leçon, si bien que d?après les dires de son professeur, elle la jouait déjà de manière «admirable» en décembre 1777. Afin que de nombreux élèves puissent faire de même, nous présentons ce joyau de la musique de piano de Mozart, jusqu?alors seulement disponible dans les recueils intégrals des sonates (HN 1 et 3), sous la forme d?une édition séparée avec, en sus, une nouvelle préface de l?éditeur.


1er MOUVEMENT Le premier mouvement de la sonate K 309 en ut majeur est un modèle pour enseigner la structure de la forme sonate. Dans les formes sonate, pas plus que dans la fugue de Bach, aucun dogme ne sert de base au processus de composition, mais chaque sonate apporte une nouvelle variation à un principe fondamental. Cela impliquait, pour Mozart, l?obligation stricte de se conformer à certains schémas sans pour autant laisser entraver sa propre liberté de création. Pour ses mouvements de sonates en tonalités majeures, il était, par exemple, favorable à la dominante comme la plupart de ses contemporains. Sur ce point, Haydn, en revanche, se délectait à tenter de nouvelles expériences.
Il serait peut-être utile, par une brève analyse, de montrer quel était le modèle de référence d?une «forme d?allegro de sonate» pour Mozart, et le premier mouvement de la sonate en ut majeur K 309 est, à cet égard, un exemple idéal pour un tel examen. Le premier thème est un début caractéristique en marcato, suivi d?une «réponse» de cinq mesures. La quarte descendante et la sixte ascendante du début forment un des motifs favoris de Mozart; c?est son procédé mélodique habituel. Il l?utilise souvent en mineur comme en majeur et beaucoup de ses thèmes commencent par ce motif (pour exemple le deuxième mouvement de la sonate en la majeur K 331 et l?Adagio en si mineur K 540 et certains thèmes des Symphonies K 114, 124, 319/II et 551/II). Les sept mesures du thème principal sont répétées avec une légère variation. Les mesures 12 à 30 viennent conclure la période du premier thème par une phrase réponse (3 3 mesures). La transition fait appel à un nouveau matériau puis, dans la mesure 35 (âpres 2 mesures préliminaires) vient un second thème cantabile à la dominante (sol majeur), comprenant deux fois quatre mesures. Il est également repris et s?achemine vers un thème de clôture plein d?allant (groupe conclusif) qui traverse un passage d?ornementation pianistique (m. 43) et enferme une merveilleuse réduction des mesures 35 et 36 dans la mesure 45. L?exposition se termine par une «codetta» de cinq mesures. Le développement présente d?abord le motif d?exposition en sol mineur puis les différentes idées du premier thème sont élaborées. Dans cette démarche, Mozart s?en réfère beaucoup plus aux principes d?école qu?il ne le fait d?habitude. Deux autres expositions du motif du départ nous conduisent à la réexposition dans la mesure 94. Le second thème, maintenant à la tonique, s?est interverti avec son accompagnement. On assiste à un rappel du début dans une coda qui s?impose avec force.

2eme MOUVEMENT Le deuxième mouvement de cette sonate est un Andante un poco adagio introspectif. Mozart avait fait part dans une lettre de sin désir d?adapter cet Andante au caractère de la jeune pianiste Rosa Cannabich pour laquelle il l?avait écrit : «c?est une jolie et charmante jeune fille, tout comme cet andante. Elle est très mûre et posée pour son âge, elle ne parle pas beaucoup et c?est toujours avec grâce et gentillesse».

3eme MOUVEMENT C?est un Rondo élégant et fluide, d?une longueur inusitée, qui clôt cette sonate. / [Sonate pour piano en Ut majeur K. 309 (284b)] / Classique / Partition / Agrafé /

Complete Piano Sonatas II-Piano works were at the centre of Alexander Scriabin's compositional output. As an outstanding pianist he began writing mainly miniatures for his instrument in the style of Romantic Piano pieces. But it was also Scriabin who unlike any other composer of his generation contributed to the continuation of the sonata tradition. Particular milestones in his output were Sonatas nos. 4 and 5 of 1903 and 1907 in which we hear forms and harmonies not heard previously. When these works are occasionally given the name 'Poème' Sonatas this indicates that they stem from the time and allude to the compositional context of Scriabin'sdaring Orchestral works 'Le Divin Poème' and 'Le Poème de l´exstase'. The editor Christoph Flamm is an expert in Russian music particularly Piano music. His research for example into Nikolai Medtner and the editions based on these findings are regarded as standard works. For his Bärenreiter edition of Scriabin's Sonata no. 5 Christoph Flamm has drawn on sources which were until recently regarded as lost or could only be consulted with great difficulty. Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's works for violin and harpsichord obbligato pervade his entire compositional oeuvre. The earliest works, like the Sonata in D minor still numbered BWV 1036, date back to the years of study with his father, yet show already a remarkable creative will of his own. The latest work, the fantasia 'C. P. E. Bachs Empfindungen' in F flat minor of 1787 is characterized by the composer's highly expressive late style. The new two-volume edition of Wiener Urtext Edition contains C. P. E. Bach's complete works for harpsichord (piano) obbligato and violin. Vol. 1 contains not only the sonatas Wq 71-74 and BWV 1036 but also the arrangements of the trios Wq 143-145 for violin and harpsichord, most of which are included in C. P. E. Bach's autographs, as well as a - previously ignored - early version of Wq 71 which, like BWV 1036, grants a rare insight into the early works of the composer. Vol. 2 contains the four major sonatas of 1763 which already fascinated Johannes Brahms. Brahms not only played them in concert, together with Joseph Hellmesberger, but also published two of these sonatas in 1864. This volume concludes with the two late works 'Arioso' and 'Fantasie' of 1781 and 1787 respectively. With these works, C. P. E. revised single edition from HN 38-Johannes Brahms?s piano sonatas opp. 1 2 and 5 were among the first works that the then 20-year-old composer published. Much of the music of the f-minor Sonata is closely connected to Brahms?s visit to Robert and Clara Schumannin Düsseldorf in the autumn of 1853. There are indications that the young Brahms was inspired by Robert Schumann?s Sonata op. 14 which was also in f minor. The music critic Eduard Hanslick also believed that he could discern theinfluence of Brahms?s older colleague when he wrote about the Sonata op. 5: ?The whole of Brahms is here though still under the spell of Schumann?. This revised Urtext edition is based on the musical text of the New BrahmsComplete Edition. The fingerings are by Andreas Boyde and offer the performer highly ingenious solutions to mastering this piano work that is so symphonic in scope.

Composed at the start of his career in 1852-3 Johannes Brahms' Piano Sonatas were amongst the 20-year-old composer's first publications. It is the slow movement of the Piano Sonata In C Major Op.1 which uses the song 'Verstohlen geht der Mond auf' that bears the earliest date April 1852.With this passionate and highly virtuosic Sonata Brahms introduced himself to the great of the musical world of his day including the Schumanns in Düsseldorf. Clara Schumann wrote afterwards that '... the whole is full of exuberant fantasy intimacy of expression and mastery of form'.Brahms' Op. 1 now appears in a separateHenle Urtext edition revised using the musical text of the Brahms Complete Edition. G Major Op. 78 D 894-Schubert?s tuneful and buoyant Sonata in G major was published in April 1827 as a ?Fantasy or Sonata? to quote the heading of its first movement.
