In his youth, when still searching for his own personal style, Debussy composed a series of short, stand-alone piano pieces. He took traditional genres such as the ballade, mazurka, nocturne and waltz, but in general used each of them just once, as if trying them out. One such was the “Valse romantiqueâ€, published by Choudens of Paris in 1891 and thus written at the same time as his famous piano works “Two Arabesques†and the “Suite bergamasqueâ€. This charming waltz is of moderate difficulty and thus ideal either as a pedagogical piece or for concert performance. Our collected volume “Debussy: Piano Pieces†(HN 404) offers numerous other short piano pieces of modest difficulty for those who find that this practical, stand-alone edition awakens in them a desire for more.

Dancers is the second volume of a set of six pieces called Romantic Suite. Composed by Robert Planel for alto saxophone and piano, this second piece is for intermediate players. In Dancers, the piano starts on its own but is soon joined by the saxophone. The piece is divided in five parts, the first one being the main theme which is later repeated as the last one. The tempo is quite fast on most of the piece, except for the third section. The full set of six volumes features: 1. Italian Serenade 2. Dancers 3. Sad Song 4. Feeling Waltz 5. Christmas story 6. Muleteer's song. Robert Planel (1908-1994) was a French musician and pedagogue.

Overture Romantique begins with a pounding ostinato of low brass and timpani, which then accompanies a short, dramatic introduction of the thematic material, which then lends itself to an Adagio. The Allegro propels the band into a rousing section of woodwind runs, multiple meter changes and a transitional fanfare. The center section of the piece features an ostinato in 3/2, with alternating sections in 4/2 and 5/2. An appearance by the transitional fanfare is played, and music previously stated returns. One final hearing of the first theme, which leads to a marvelous Eb major chord, features the ostinato and the trombones stating the opening music one more time. One of Smith’s first virtuoso efforts for the concert band.

Zoltán Kocsis (1952 - 2016) was not just a phenomenal pianist. He was also regarded as a musical 'polymath' whose genius embraced the activities of a composer, conductor, editor, instrumentalist, and arranger. In the last capacity, he added some 150 works to symphonic, chamber, song and piano repertoire. He gladly adapted music of the turn of the 20th century, as appears from his transcriptions of Richard Strauss, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Enescu, and above all, Debussy. (Many of these are distributed by Editio Musica Budapest.) 'In Debussy's case, (...) I was always interested in works that offered possibilities beyond the bounds of the piano, possibilities for orchestration.Just as with Liszt it was often possible to see that certain of his works had been written for piano for publication purposes, so with Debussy it is clear that mainly his song accompaniments exceeded the bounds of possibility for the piano,' Kocsis stated in one interview. Perhaps that recognition also encouraged him to arrange the popular piano work Valse romantique (1890) for clarinet and piano. The arrangement superbly pinpoints the sensitive, almost ingratiating tunefulness of the Waltz, adding a piece that sounds great and is rewarding to perform to the clarinet repertoire.
