These beautiful works display a simple often Chopinesque style of romanticism while bearing the unmistakable Russian flavor the composer captured in all his work. Original key for high voice-Rachmaninoff composed his collection of 13 songs Op. 34 in 1912 but it was only three years later that he added a little closing piece without any text: the Vocalise which soonoutshone the other songs in terms of popularity and renown. Since its first performance in 1916 this expressive melancholy piece has circulated in countless arrangements by others.Rachmaninoff himself made anarrangement for Orchestra and Voice as well as one for orchestra alone. Our Urtext edition contains the original version for High Voice and Piano and is based on the autograph sources in the Glinka Museum in Moscow. This three-minute piece draws on pianist Kirill Gerstein?s idiomatic grasp of the composer?s music, transcribing the song in a way that recalls Rachmaninoff?s writing from the early 1900s. The orchestral suite Symphonic Dances Op. 45 from 1940 is Rachmaninoff's last work. Almost at the same time, he wrote an arrangement of the piece for two pianos which he played with Vladimir Horowitz in a private setting. Rachmaninov premiered the Piano Concerto No. 3 Op. 30 in New York with the New York Symphony Orchestra led by Walter Damrosch on November 28 1909. The following January he played it with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gustav Mahler. This a deep work which is full of virtuosic hurdles and lengthy cadenzas. Today this concerto carries the nickname of Rach 3 and has become the most popular choice among piano competition candidates wanting to perform a virtuoso display piece. This particular work is a reduction for two pianos.
