Hermann Schroeder's abundant oeuvre in the field of chorale-bound organ music is much less known among organists than his free - especially the concertante - organ works, although Hermann Schroeder as an organist felt particularly bound to liturgy and liturgical singing. And according to him, any liturgical organ music should always bear a direct relation to singing. The purpose of the present anthology is to provide the player a representative selection of Schroeder's chorale arrangements. Most of these chorales are relatively short and of medium difficulty at most. The chorale melody can be heard well most of the time so that the pieces are ideal for being used in church services. In the alphabetical index, the beginnings of song titles are accompanied by the corresponding number from Gotteslob (GL) or the Protestant Hymnal for better orientation./ Répertoire / Orgue

For quite some time posterity remembered Reynaldo Hahn (1874-1947) for just a handful of songs and the operetta Ciboulette overlooking the incredible diversity of a catalogue as eclectic as it is appealing. Yet his chamber music contains many little-known treasures: thus cellist Steven Isserlis in his preface hastens to hail the first modern edition of these two scores which he regularly plays in recital so much does their beauty enchant the audience. Published in 1911 the Two Improvisations on Irish Airs for cello and piano turn out to be the transcription of his first and third Preludes for piano four hands (1894). Thesefolk themes come from the collection Songs of Old Ireland published 12 years earlier by Charles Villiers Stanford: gracefully and tenderly The Little Red Lark unfurls a melancholic tune of which the regular foundation respects the breadth of phrase typical of folk songs; in The Willow-Tree the lover begs his beloved in vain to take him in her arms one last time before he lies down lifeless in the shade of the tree. Beyond this sensitive exploration of the Irish soul Hahn offers us a journey into the past: the Variations chantantes sur un air ancien develop a theme borrowed from Cavalli’s opera Xerse. In this aria (1660 version: Act IV sc. 6) Ambassador Periarco dreams of moving away from court intrigues to be able to taste the pleasures ‘to which the gods have destined him’. Reynaldo Hahn’s variations succeed in maintaining the sweet simplicity of this theme as noble as it is refined.

pour deux harpes-French harpist composer and teacher Marcel Tournier (1879-1951) wrote important repertoire for the Harp which expanded the harmonic and technical possibilities of the instrument. His Four Preludes for Two Harps is no exception. Published in 1921 Four Preludes is still performed and recorded by harpists. The first volume comprises the first two preludes in which tonality and rhythm are sublimely experimented with as well as uses of harmonics. Tournier's Four Preludes is suitable for all intermediate to advanced Harp duets seeking to explore varied repertoire on the instrument.

Virtuoso jazz in classical form: Nikolai Kapustin (b. 1937) is an excellent jazz pianist arranger and composer. His piano sonatas are now published by Schott Music for the first time. Suitable for pianists looking for technically demanding pieces between modern and jazz music which sound like highly skilled yet notated improvisation. Kapustin's monumental set of Preludes and Fugues Op.82 completed in 1997 may well be the most important work written for piano in the genre since Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and Shostakovich's 24 Preludes and Fugues Op.87. In this sprawling collection Kapustin combines his complete mastery of jazzidioms with a thorough assimilation of contrapunctal techniques like canon imitation inversion and augmentation. Ingenuously each prelude and fugue pair share their motivic material.

John Gordon Cameron (1900-1989) was a British composer who was at one time organist at St Mary’s Cathedral Glasgow and lecturer at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music. His collection of Six Preludes On Hymn Tunes for Organ was dedicated to Bryce Craig. It remains his most popular work with most of the preludes still commonly performed today. The well-known hymn tunes which inspired each piece are Rockingham - Bristol - Capetown - Martyrdom - Tune By Orlando Gibbons - Windsor.
