Sing, Choirs! is a library in miniature. It contains many of the Christian church's popular traditional anthems, including at least one example that will be suitable for each of the major services of the year. A number of Anglican chants (Psalms, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis) are included, set out in a way that should enable those who are unfamiliar with the style to perform them easily. The selection of movements from the Mass can be used to enrich the music of the liturgy in services. Many of the works in Sing, Choirs! are presented in their original form, such as Bruckner's Locus Iste and Mozart's Laudate Dominum . Others are arrangements, adaptations or longer pieces, abridged to bring them into the scope of a useable anthem, including choral arrangements of Handel's Largo , the Ave Marias by Schubert and by Bach and Gounod, and Franck's Panis Angelicus amongst many others. This collection has practicability as a priority. The Organ parts can be played on either the Piano or the Keyboard. The pedal exercises at the beginning are rudimentary and should be practiced in all keys, gradually accelerating the tempo. The studies are graded according to their polyphony, beginning with simple two part exercises, followed by those in three and more parts. This acquaintance with the strict principles of polyphonic music, and the introduction to effective part writing, with a knowledge of harmonic form and architectonic values, provide the essential background for the correct performance of polyphonic music, especialle the fugue. He will be shown the technical evolution of organ music during the centuries and thus prepared for an artistic execution and interpretation of old and new words, especially for the incomparable art of our great Johann Sebastian Bach. When Reubke died in 1858 at the age of only 24 his achievements included two monumental works (a Piano sonata and an Organ sonata) and a few smaller compositions including a Trio for Organ. This Urtext edition brings together the two Organ works in a new edition: the Organ sonata is also known by the title of the 94th Psalm whose words inspired its content. The Sonata whose style and virtuosity show the influence of Liszt is one of the greatest Organ works of the whole Romantic period. The Trio a musically charming but technically less demanding piece should represent a welcome addition to the teaching repertoire forOrgan. The only original documents remaining for these works are the first editions. In this new edition we have attempted to correct obvious mistakes in the first impression and to offer cautious suggestions for improvements in dubious instances.

Sir George Thalben-Ball was organists of the Temple Church in London for over sixty years. Also a music advisor to the BBC his compositions include Elegy Tune In E In The Style Of John Stanley Variations On Psalm And Hymn Tunes and Variations On A Theme By Paganini For Organ Pedals.

In the Variations on Old Psalm-Tunes for Organ Dyson fully explores the composer’s chosen sources: ‘Hard the glad sound’ from Ravencroft’s Psalter (1621) Orlando Gibbons’s Song 24 ‘O word Immortal’ and Song 5 ‘O Prince of Peace ’ and ‘I was glad’ from the Scottish Psalter (1615). These works are popular for service voluntaries.Twentieth century composer and educator George Dyson was a writer of ambitious and critically well-received works that due to their unfashionably accessible late Romantic style were allowed to languish and are now in the process of reassessment and renewed performance. However Dyson’s works for unison Voice and church music in particular histwo settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis have remained active in the Anglican repertoire.
