The Psalms inspired Mendelssohn throughout his working life, and, aside from a cappella settings, he left behind five great orchestral Psalms. Schumann assesed in 1837 that Psalm 42 was the highest point that he [Mendelssohn] reached as a composer for the church. Indeed the highest point recent church music has reached at all. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score available separately - see item CA.4007200.

Psalm texts inspired Mendelssohn throughout his composing career. In 1837 Robert Schumann judged Mendelssohn's setting of Psalm 42 as the highest level that he has achieved as a composer of church music, indeed the highest level that modern church music has ever reached. With this arrangement of Mendelssohn's cantata Wie der Hirsch schreit (As the hart longs) smaller choirs and choirs with more limited resources of space or finance can now perform this popular work. The original symphonic wind and brass forces have been reduced from 15 to 5 wind and brass forces. All the vocal parts (soloists and chorus) are identical with the original version, so that the vocal scores and chorus scores of that version can be used. Can be performed by smaller choirs with smaller instrumental forces Usable with the vocal scores and choral scores from the original version. Complete performance material available on loan. carus plus: the work is also available in carus music, the choir app, and the practice CD series Carus Choir Coach. Elijah is regarded as a milestone in Mendelssohn's compositional output and as a high point in the oratorio literature of the 19th century. Mendelssohn composed his second great oratorio just a year before his premature death. This excitingly dramatic work also expresses a fervent belief in God, a belief which in the 19th century was no longer self-evident. Mendelssohn transposed the visible world of the Old Testament into numerous musical expressive possibilities in which Old Testament texts, including psalm texts and commentaries from the words of the Prophets, were shaped into biblical dramas. For a subject like Elijah ... the drama must reign supreme ... the characters must be introduced speaking and acting like living people ... a quite vivid world of the sort we find in every chapter of the Old Testament. Mendelssohn to his librettist. Score available separately - see item CA.4013000.

In 1860 Camille Saint-Saens composed his Oratorio de Noel for five vocal soloists, mixed choir, strings, organ and harp. The work, sung in Latin, is based on texts from the Old and New Testaments, the Psalms and Gospels, as well as the Catholic Christmas liturgy. A distinctive chamber music-like instrumentation, with lyrical soloistic parts and a modest choral part combine to create a basic pastoral mood which has led this Christmas Oratorio to become one of the most performed works by Saint-Saens. Carus offers this work both in its original version and in an arrangement in which the choir is accompanied solely by an organ. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Mendelssohn describes to his friend Klingemann the 1840 work as a 'symphony for chorus and orchestra'... First three symphonic movements, to which 12 choral- and solo- movements are appendaged; the words from the Psalms, and indeed all pieces, vocal and instrumental, are composed in the words 'Everything which has breath, Praise the Lord'; one understands by this that first the instruments give praise in their own way, and then the chorus and the individual voices.
