Quadri Morandi (2014) ties together two essential themes of Kai Niminen's (b. 1953) compositional style: guitar and a subject inspired by Italy. The strong presence of the guitar in his works is natural since he is in an actively performing guitarist himself, and guitar works indeed play a significant role in his oeuvre. Moreover, he has written plenty of orchestral music; for instance two symphonies, numerous concertos, and chamber music. In the field of Finnish music he is a composer who can be characterized as free from any specific school or style. In his musical language, free tonal in essence, one can detect traces of Impressionism, Neoromanticism and even Expressionism at times, but he is also willing to employ more recent 20th-century stylistic devices. Nieminen has mentioned that he finds himself very similar to Japanese Toru Takemitsu both musically and in thought. Mediterannean culture and Italy especially have been close to Nieminen's heart ever since he first visited the country and appeared in the jury of the international Fernando Sor guitar competition in 1981. He has composed a great number of works which refer to Italian landscapes or artists. The work Quadri Morandi (Morandi's pictures) is written in four movements. It has at its centre the painter Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), who is known as a master of still lifes and landscapes painted in a plain manner and is subdued colours. Their atmosphere typically reflects a calm spirit. This is the third guitar work that nieminen has written for Kleemola. It is easy to find a counterpart for the encaptivating realm of Morandi's art in Nieminen's clear and pure expression. The titles and expression markings also include several references to Morandi. For example, in the opening movement Prelude the words la Natura morta (still life) appear as an additional note on the chord sequence following the freely flowing opening section. At the end of the movement one can hear rhythmic motif coloured with flageolets that repeats the syllables of the painter's name: Gior-gio Moran-di. A similar motif can be heard at the end of the second movement Quasi cadenza. The tranquilly breathing third movement Paesaggio (landscape) creates an illusion of landscape by imitating the echo of monastery bells (come campane del monastero) and at the same time refers to il monaco (the monk), the name by which Morandi was often called. The final movement Ritratto (Portrait) is the most extensive of all the movements and can be seen, with its recurring motifs, as a reflection of the stable yet subtly varying elements of Morandi's art. The work ends with the rhythmic motif that once more echoes Morandi's name, like signature.

Scopo del libro è la messa a fuoco delle conseguenze prodotte da tale straordinario ‘archivio sull’oralità ’. Da Auto da fé a Massa e potere, dalle giovanili pièces teatrali alla trilogia autobiografica e agli ultimi appunti degli anni Novanta, le opere dello studioso risultano tenute assieme da una sofisticata strutturazione acustica del pensiero, una metodologia della comprensione che di quel materiale si nutriva assiduamente, talvolta producendo interventi di autentica ‘archeologia sonora’. Interventi eseguiti in quella particolare officina mobile, avente per base la biblioteca-studio, che non smetteva di operare nelle osterie e nei caffè notturni, sui tram e per le strade, traendone anzi preziosa linfa. Da quei luoghi prediletti, Canetti ascoltava ed osservava il brulicare del popolo, che come nei quadri di Bruegel può essere placido e festoso, ma anche mostrare i denti e colpire al cuore; lì elaborava le nozioni di ‘cristalli di massa’, ‘metamorfosi’, ‘scarica’, sempre e innanzitutto aiutandosi con l’udito, come chi si serva dell’olfatto prima di portare cibo alla bocca. Seguendo questo intricato itinerario acustico è possibile incontrare Karl Kraus, Alban Berg, Hermann Scherchen, Cesare Pavese, James Joyce, Alma e Anna Mahler; e poi la lingua dei Boscimani, arcaica portatrice di miti, le voci degli animali e la danza dei Maori, il rumore prodotto dalle gocce di pioggia e le allucinazioni auditive di uno schizofrenico, la ‘massa statica’ dei concerti e la figura del direttore d’orchestra, incarnazione del potere: il tutto in una fitta trama di oralità , suono e musica che diventa per il lettore, come lo fu per lo scrittore, anche inesauribile e spesso inedita fonte di dati.

The Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) was self-educated to a large extent but went on to become one of the ?Mighty Five? which also included Balakirev, Cui, Borodin and Rimsky-Korsakov. Today he is considered the innovator of Russian music par excellence. He composed Pictures at an Exhibition in 1874, inspired by ten pictures produced by his then recently deceased friend, the Russian architect and artist Victor Hartmann. The French composer Maurice Ravel made an orchestration of Mussorgsky?s composition in 1922 which is now more well-known and more performed than the original piano suite. For his transcription of Pictures at an Exhibition, Tohru Takahashimade use of the original piano composition by Mussorgsky. The Great Gate of Kiev, issued here separately, is probably the best known melody from this classical masterpiece. De Russische componist Moessorgsky (1839-1881) componeerde Pictures at an Exhibition (Schilderijententoonstelling) in 1874. Suite from Hymn of the Highlands draws three expressive musical pictures of the Scottish highlands. The first movement, Ardross Castle, features solo passages for clarinet and bassoon and features a fascinating bagpipe melody. The second movement, Alladale, is a saxophone trio with an accompaniment featuring the percussion section. Peter Benoit was born at Harlebeke on 17 August 1834 and died in Antwerp on 8 March 1901. He was, without doubt, the most important Flemish composer of the nineteenth century, responsible for the foundation of a Flemish national school of music. He studied at the Brussels Conservatory, where his teachers included Fétis, and won the Grote Rome Prize, the highest musical distinction in Belgium. He made use of the money from the prize for a study tour through Germany and Bohemia and afterwards settled in Paris where, in 1862, he became conductor of the Buffes-Parisiens. The following year he returned to Brussels and achieved phenomenal success with his Quadrilogie religieuse for choir and orchestra and with the oratorio of 1866, Lucifer. From then onwards he laid aside instrumental music and concentrated almost exclusively on vocal and choral music with Flemish texts. In 1867 he settled in Antwerp, where he was appointed director of the local music school, which under his leadership became the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory. In addition to his activity as a composer, he proved himself to be a remarkable educator, conductor and music administrator.
