The Little Quartet for Four Horns op. 185 by Erkki Melartin was commissioned by the progenitor of Finnish horn playing, Holger Fransman (1909-1997). The Helsinki Music Institute's horn class received this three movement quartet from their principal for the spring concert in May 1936. A composition for four French horns was a rarity in 1930s Finland. The quartet was performed for decades as Holger Fransman's arrangement. This edition is based on the original version of the composer.

“Something quite curious, I believe†– It was thus that Robert Schumann described the Concert Piece for Four Horns and large orchestra in a letter and he did indeed break new ground with this work as far as the scoring and treatment of the instruments was concerned. When it was composed in 1849, the French horn was still fairly new, enabling players to play previously unheard-of runs and free modulations, a fact which Schumann made the most of, particularly with his scoring for four horns. Even today the Concert Piece is the romantic work for horn par excellence and a benchmark for all soloists.

This volume contains mainly transcriptions, the majority of them from four-part choral works, these transcriptions have been prepared by the highly experienced teacher of brass instruments, Péter Perényi. In compiling the collection he was helped by his own music school pupils, who played through a large mass of material and selected the pieces they liked best. The pieces can be played on two trumpets and two trombones (or two tenor horns), the trombone parts avoid the seventh position throughout.
