Quintet for String Quartet and Cello

Written for piano two violins viola and cello.First performed at the Petworth Festival June 1984 by the Delmé String Quartet and John McCabe (piano).

The composition cost him his sleep. In October 1842 when Schumann had finished his Piano quintet in a short period of time he was physically and emotionally drained. The work in no way reflects this quite thecontrary. ?Full of strength and freshness? said Clara Schumann of the new composition as well as ?extremely brilliant and effective?. Even Richard Wagner added his voice to the great wave of admiration. Thus Op.44 soon became one of Schumann?s most successful compositions which today is still a jewel in chamber music literature. If the quartet reminds one of a Piano concerto with Orchestra in String quartet format attimes this is explained by the fact that it was intended for Clara?s repertoire. The work was also dedicated to this brilliant pianist.

New detailed foreword by Dvo ák scholar David Beveridge (Eng/Cz/Ger).Dvo ák?s String Quintet in G Op.77 had five movements when it was premiered on 18 March 1876. Its second movement was the Intermezzo from his String Quartet in E minor (1870). Later Dvo ák removed this movement from the Quintet expanded it and published it as a separate Notturno for String Orchestra Op.40. The Intermezzo is included in its original version in the appendix of the score.This edition is based on the Complete Edition of the Works of Anton n Dvo ák the principal source being the first edition of 1888 for which Dvo áksubjected the work to revision.
