Le Choro brésilien et la ragtime américaine sont deux expressions musicales qui ont résulté de dénommer européen et d'Africain et d'influences rythmiques. Pour Choro l'influence de la polka a régné, tandis que pour la ragtime la marche était l'influence principale, mais dans les deux cas la culture musicale africaine (avec ses rythmes syncopés), présent dans brésilien et les sociétés américaines, étaient décisives pour la formation de ces styles. Bien que développé indépendamment et parallèlement à l'un l'autre au fin du 19ème siècle, ces deux styles musicaux partagent de grandes similitudes, même par rapport à l'impact négatif a fait sur la société quand chacun des deux ont émergé, et l'acceptation suivante des deux styles même par des compositeurs de musique classique. Le but de ce travail est d'illustrer musicalement les similitudes incroyables entre Choro et ragtime. Nous avons choisi dix airs de ragtime (cinq composés par Scott Joplin, son représentant principal), qui ont été exécutés par un ensemble de Choro suivant la mêmes oscillation, rythme et harmonie traditionnels de Choro. Pour le solo nous avons utilisé les instruments typiques utilisés dans Choro : cannelure, mandoline, clarinette, et saxo. Les mélodies ont été maintenues identiques aux versions originales respectives. Nous avons demandé à des solistes de les exécuter suivant loyalement le score la première fois que le thème a été joué, ajoutant les variations ou les improvisations typiques de Choro dans les répétitions. Dans quelques répétitions, l'ensemble de Choro a également changé la musique basse de Choro en maxixe et/ou samba-canção, pour illustrer comment d'autres styles brésiliens de musique font partie du projet. Par rapport à l'harmonie, nous avons suivi les indications incluses dans les scores originaux pour le piano comme référence de base, mais avons fait quelques ajustements pour refléter mieux la langue de Choro. It was first performed in 1899, but because of hesitation concerning the marketability of such a work, it was not published until 1902. As was feared, it was a commercial failure, however this led to a later 1906 publication in a solo piano arrangement.
