Gustav Mahler, who judged Pique Dame to be Tchaikovskys most mature and artistically solid musical work, is certainly not alone with his opinion. A confession made by Tchaikovsky a few months before his death show to want extent the composer, after an initial period of hesitation, was possessed by his work on this opera: I composed it with uncommon passion and enthusiasm, suffered from everything that happens in it and related to it with every fibre in my body (it went so far that I even feared the apparition of the ghost for a while). Now I hope that all my enthusiasm, excitement and devotion will find an echo in the hearts of receptive listeners.

To Mediterrane Meditiationer / Two Mediterranean Meditations for Piano solo was composed by Per Nørgård in 1980. Dedicated Ragnhild Toft.
1. Græsk motiv (Greek motif) 2. Medstrømme (Cocurrent) The piano pieces (Two Mediterranean meditations) was inspired by a little town, Isternia, in the Greek island Tinos. During a stay there I was captured by the timeless peace that emitted from the shimmering white sculptured steps, and by the sounds in the narrow streets, creating an atmosphere of balanced activity on the background of a meditative silence. The pianopieces are related to the work “Isternia” (1979, for cimbalon solo, later rewritten for other instruments); the music seems to possess a certain timeless or rather ´genre-less´ character; this is effected through the use of archetypal melodies and meters changed in a rather ´cubistic´ way. In this respect the work is related to my “Sonora” (for flute and harp) and the duet “Medstrøms og modstrøms” (“Cocurrent & countercurrent”) Per Nørgård

The teachers under whom Ãrpád Balázs (b.1937) studied composition - Ferenc Farkas, Aram Khachaturian and Goffredo Petrassi - each independently formed the opinion that with his lyrical gift Ãrpád Balázs's true creative field would be that of choral music and wind ensembles. Their early predictions are borne out by the roughly two hundred and fifty works for choir and almost twenty for wind orchestra that the composer has since produced. It is interesting that in the suite entitled Négy kép (Four pictures) the stylistic features of these two related musical fields are united. In it the wind instruments sing! It was not by chance that the expansive second movement was given thetitle Cantilena, while the slightly livelier but just as lyrical third movement was entitled Arietta. The opening movement of the work is a stridently jolly, energetic Induló (March), but not one of the rigidly military kind: the 6/8 rhythm contributes to its light-hearted character. This music is avowedly akin to the ballet music of Prokofiev. This choice series of four character pieces is crowned by Játék (Play) in which conveying the effect of the mixture of lines moving in parallel and then colliding with each other may be more technically demanding, but is well worth the effort! In composing Puszta, Jan Van der Roost wrote folk dances related to Slavonic folk music. Its character and sounds are comparable to the Hungarian and Slavonic dances by Brahms and Dvorak and to the Hungarian Rhapsodies by Liszt. All the melodies, however, are newly composed, not adapted from existing dances. As director of the Bavarian Radio Choir, Howard Arman has been actively engaged with international Christmas carols through various Christmas-related CD productions in the past years. This has resulted in a number of original arrangements for four- to eight-part mixed choir a cappella, shedding new light on well-known classics such as O du frohliche [O, you joyful], Stille Nacht [Silent Night] and Lasst uns froh und munter sein [Let us be happy and cheerful]. The first volume includes five Christmas carols from the German-speaking regions. They range from simple but harmonically intriguing settings such as Lieb Nachtigall, wach auf [Dear nightingale, wake up] to eight-part sound paintings with bell-like chimes as in O du frohliche and classical double choir settings such as Resonet in laudibus. The second volume includes five Christmas spirituals with English texts, forming a contrast to the solemn and festive character of the first. The choir can prove its swing and jazz qualities here; the stirring arrangements are a gain for classical Christmas concerts, too. Following the tradition of the spiritual, some settings also require soloists, which can, however, also be recruited from the choir if adequate singers are available. The first piece combines the spirituals It's a Birthday and Wasn't That a Mighty Day to form a medley, Ain't That a Rockin' gives a moment of tranquility before the likewise rousing spirituals Mary Had a Baby and Little David conclude the volume. In both volumes, Howard Arman provides a short preface in German and English, explaining the background of each piece and giving advice on performance.

Somber for piano (2017) was commissioned by Ville Hautakangas. The composer sees the character of the work autumnal, as often in his compositions. The fast middle section is related to Turriago's first piano sonata, and his passion for jazz is clearly audible. Somber has many tempo changes and a built-in restlessness. The career of the composer, pianist and conductor Tuomas Turriago (b. 1979) has been very versatile, the main motivator being a passion for music, regardless of instrument, style or genre. As a pianist, he has focused on chamber music, and has worked as a lecturer in collaborating piano at Tampere Music Academy since 2004. He has been soloist of various Finnish orchestras and has performed at numerous music festivals in Finland and all over Europe, the US, Colombia, Near East and Far East.

The premiere of this work in December 1813 ranks among the greatest successes Beethoven ever celebrated in public as a composer.
