Requiem: Mixed Choir and Accomp.: Vocal Score

Joseph Martin Kraus [1756–1792] composed his Requiem in 1775at the age of 19 for the parish church in his hometown of Buchen Odenwald. This followed the Miserere of 1773 and is the second of his surviving sacred compositions. Already in this early work Kraus shows that he was a representative of the musical “Sturm und Drang.” With all its youthful unconcern towards compositional technique this music displays his seriousness and strength of expression together with a dark instrumental timbre as well as an abruptness or at times brusqueness. The publication of the Requiem in the Complete Edition is the first historical and critical edition of the work

For two years Dvorák focused on his Requiem before it was premiered in 1891 under his own direction in Birmingham. This work reflects Dvorák's deeply religious attitude. Despite all the drama and orchestral abundance the characteristics of this work lies between the close relationship between text content and musical expression. Arranged for SATB and Piano accompaniment.

Edited by David Rosen-The Works of Giuseppe Verdi is the first critical edition of the composer’s oeuvre. Together with his operas the series presents his songs his choral music and sacred pieces and his string quartet and other instrumental works. This edition of Messa da Requiem is based on Verdi’s autograph score and other original sources. The appendices include two pieces from the compositional history of the Requiem: an early version of the Libera me composed in 1869 as part of a collaborative work planned as a memorial to Rossini and the Liber scriptus which in the original score of the Manzoni memorial Requiem was composed as a fugue for chorus. The introduction to the score tracesthe complex compositional and performance histories of the Requiem and discusses the work’s problems of instrumentation and notation while the critical commentary gives a full description of the sources and an account of all editorial decisions.

Written for the reconsecration of Coventry Cathedral Benjamin Britten's War Requiem Op.66 was first performed there on the 30th May 1962. The War Requiem was not meant to be a pro-British piece or a glorification of British soldiers but a public statement of Britten's anti-war convictions.
