Lasting 27 minutes, Kalevi Aho’s String quartet no. 4 (2021) is in four movements. The first, Nocturne, begins with a hazily muted melody dominated by the interval of a minor third on the second violin. Though the first movement begins in nocturnal mood, there is also some more forceful music around the middle. The second movement, Allegro capriccioso, is quick with quirky rhythms. At times tempestuous, it faces the players with the biggest technical and virtuoso challenges. The following Largo is slow. A couple of times in the first half it is dominated by soft, mysterious harmonies. The tempo marking of the virtuosic closing movement is Presto, leggiore. The movement begins with quick, flickering, will-o’-the-wisp-like music. It later builds up to an extremely violent climax dominated by tremolo figures on the second violin and thick chords on the other instruments. The flickering music of the beginning returns at the end, before dissolving into silence. This product includes the full score (A4) and the parts (B4).

Seventy next year, Bayan Northcott is a leading writer about music, and a composer who has particularly focused on variation forms - hence the 'doubles' of this new work ('doubles' being an alternative term for variations, as found for example in Bach); and hence, in celebratory mode, 'doubles all round' as the title for this sparkling piece d'occasion composed at the request of Endymion to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Doubles All Round would indeed make an ideal five-minute introduction to a new-music concert, or a fascinating contemporary excursus in a classical programme that featured the line up of flute/piccolo, clarinet/bass clarinet, horn, violin, cello and piano. The work is launched by a vigorous keyboard prelude, which returns after the third double in a brief cadenza, before the piece is rounded off by the fourth double, quasi una coda. Bayan Northcott's collected critical writings, The Way We Listen Now, were published by Plumbago Books in 2009.

Aurora Dances was commissioned by the Hong Kong-based Winter Band Festival, and consists of three movements, to be played without a break. 'Aurora Borealis' opens with florid woodwind figures and highlights different sections of the band in turn. The second movement 'Aurora Australis' leads to a sombre chorale, which builds to a full-band climax. The finale 'Aurora Dances' is characterised by rhythmic, dance-like themes. A central section features a contrasting legato melody, but this doesn't dispel the energetic feel of the opening, which returns to close the work.

One More Mountain is a dynamic musical drama in one movement for Horn, Trombone and Piano. It features virtuosity of the brass players and lyricism of the pianist. The Dramatic opening theme displays strength of character and builds to a climax. Wistful, ever in motion, the piano introduces the first Waltz theme. The trombone joins in with a soulful outpouring of love, and finally the Horn joins for a beautiful trio of Waltz melodies combined. Building through Honor, the Triumphant climax blazes, then quickly fades as the Dramatic theme returns in canon. The trio of Waltz themes returns, and this time Honor leads to Finding Peace. Slowly and softly the piano emerges, grows rapidly, and is joined by the brass for a rip roarin’ Heroic Ride to the end. Difficulty Level: Horn/Trombone – 5, Piano - 4 Horn, Trombone & Piano Duration: 7'30 Composed: 2022 Published by: Amy Mills Music, LLC.

The Iguana Returns is a grade 2 funk chart. The nomadic iguana (first introduced in a previous release in this series, Please Don't Climb On The Iguana) is a steel sculpture outside of the Science Museum of Minnesota in St. Paul. Since the earlier piece, the Science Museum has changed locations, so the iguana had to leave for a time. It has since returned to its new home, looking forward to new adventures in the future.

Sparkling Brass was commissioned by Osaka Concert Brass, one of Japan’s top brass bands, and premiered by them on 27th December 2018 during a concert which celebrated their 10th Anniversary. The work opens in lively mood with fanfare-style figures from the lower band which are answered by the cornets. This interplay intensifies until the mood calms suddenly to introduce a chorale which leads to a duet-cadenza for cornet and euphonium. The rhythmic mood of the opening soon returns and leads to the main theme of the work, a modal caccia which features various section of the band. A short bridge passage leads to a change of key and a new cantabile theme which isintroduced by euphoniums and baritone. This is taken up by the full band after another change of key and leads back to the caccia theme. A transformed version of the opening fanfare returns to close the work.

Dreamsong was commissioned by Geir Ulseth and the Nidaros Brass Band from Trondheim, Norway. After a short introduction, the soloistintroduces a rather nostalgic melody, accompanied by the lower brass parts. A fast central section is then played by the band, whichleads to a climax. Eventually, the main melody played by the solo cornet and flugel horn returns, overlaid with an ornamented counter-melody from the soloist, who then closes the piece with a short cadenza.

The procession of King Renaud Op. 19b is a suite in five parts and is based on tales that originated in southern European folk songs, dating back as far as the 16th century. A large portion of these songs are of the genre “Complaintesâ€, songs in which the text gives a detailed description of events of a generally criminal or macabre character. The first movement of the suite is based on the song La porcheronne (The Swineherd). It tells the story of a young woman forced by her mother-in-law to tend pigs while her husband is away fighting in the war. She is freed only when her husband returns, seven years later. The second movement tells the story of La marquise empoisonnée (The Poisoned Marquise). A marquise is coerced by her king to become his mistress. The jealous queen poisons her by means of a bouquet of deadly scented flowers. Despite having the character of a merry dance, the third movement, La maumariée vengée (The Avenged Bride) tells the touching story of Queen Clotilde, persecuted for her refusal to live according to Aryan beliefs.La belle engloutie (The Swallowed Beauty) relates the tale of the young wife of King Renaud. She cannot imagine a life without her husband, who was mortally wounded in the war, and begs the earth to open and swallow her up so that she may rejoin her love. The gruesome content of the final part, Le tueur de femmes (The Wife Killer), bears a strong resemblance to the tale of Bluebeard. The story is about a young wife in danger of being drowned in a pond by her husband, which is what happened to her 13 predecessors. Thanks to her cunning, she manages to turn the tables and contrive her husband's demise.

Music for Life was commissioned by the members of Community Band South in Pittsburgh to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The band's motto, Music for a Lifetime, provided the inspiration for the title. It is a work always full of life and vitality, even in its more reflective moments. Because of this, the piece is almost totally melodic, relying little on development or other formal devices. A series of lively melodic statements precedes a slower central section, designed to showcase the band's talented clarinet section. But the moment of reflection is short-lived and the livelier music returns to end the work in the same spirit that it started.

Sunday in the Park was written for tenor horn virtuoso Sheona White, and commissioned by her partner, Matt Wade, as a Christmas present. Composer Philip Sparke had known and admired Sheona's playing for many years, having produced her first solo CD and writtenpieces for her previously. Both composer and performer are huge fans of the late Karen Carpenter, Sheona in part modelling her soundon the singer's sultry voice; so it was decided that this new solo would be a piece which, whilst not being a 'Carpenters' pastiche, paid tribute to their relaxed style and rich harmonic language. Sunday in the Park opens with an accompanied cadenza for the soloist, which leads to a gentle rhythmic melody with a laid-back feel. This is taken up by the band but the soloist sparks a changeof mood by introducing a faster light rock interlude. This reaches a climax, at which point the music unwinds until the original mood returns. A variation on the original melody leads to a short cadenza from the soloist, which brings the work to a peaceful close.

How often has something been justified by, declared to be, or blessed as “in the name of†some cause or other? How can it be that opposing armies and the use of weapons are ever “in the name ofâ€...? This is a common thread in the history of different faiths. Good was created but evil was committed and all “in the name of...†This thread is also found in the history of the Premonstratensian Abbey at Wadgassen. The abbey was built in the 12th century on unfertile, desolate moorland, which later evolved into the most powerful religious community in the Saarland. The history of the abbey records quite astounding achievements under the motto desertum florebit quasi lilium (“the desert will bloom like a lilyâ€); but also the harsh treatment of delinquents. The order had its own school, in which children were taught the seven liberal arts (which included music as well as geography and astronomy), but the poor were left to starve outside the abbey walls and were only allowed to eat from the members' on feast days. The medieval witch trials demanded their pound of flesh, and one group that fell victim were ecstatic dancers who moved wildly to music--which was interpreted as the devil's work. The result: a show trial that sentenced the dancers to death by fire. All in the name of... The year is 1789: Abbot Bordier is in the tenth year of his command. He does not yet know that he is to be the last abbot of an almost 700-year-tradition. Not far from the abbey is the French border, which has long been making itself felt with the sound of gunfire, and the brothers continue to keep a nervous eye on it. The first portents of the French Revolution loom, but no one wants to believe it--that is, until the French pound the door down, storm the abbey and come right into the brothers' chambers. In a blind fury, all the pipes of the abbey organ are torn out, icons beheaded with swords and brothers beaten death while numerous buildings are set on fire. The abbey church is in flames. A frantic and desperate escape begins. Abbot Bordier and a handful of brothers make their getaway via the River Saar, adjacent to the abbey, to the neighbouring village of Bous. They survive, but their life--the Premonstratensian abbey--is destroyed. While they flee towards Prague and the sanctuary of the Strahov Monastery, the abbey at Wadgassen is razed to the ground and becomes a stone quarry. The desert blooms once more, however. A few short decades later, a glasswork arises from the foundations of the abbey. As peace returns to the region, it brings jobs and a new vision for its people.
