Written during the winter of 2007, this work is a metaphor of the three stages of a short but intense love story.

The first movement is called Poniente. This is the name of a rainy wind that comes from west. In this sense, west is not only the place where the sun sets, but where night begins. The first movement represents the beginning, the happiness and freshness of something new. The violin evokes freshness and spontaneity over the constant rhythm of the guitar, which plays the higher voice. While the violin signs happily, the guitar, instead of being just its accompaniment, plays the role of a counterpoint with its rhythmical and constant theme.

The second movement is called Largo-Balada-Largo and it's divided in two different parts. In the first one, guitar plays alone, reflexive and slow, representing the moments of loneliness of the one that waits for the lovers reunion. In the second movement, violin and guitar begin a dialogue where the violin plays a sweet yearning ballad, while the guitar answers as a baroque counterpoint. At the end, calm comes back, as in the first part of the second movement.

The third movement is called Danza ritual and it is the most violent of the three parts. It represents the lovers reunion, the resolution of all the controlled excitement. It's the flame that consumes quickly but intensely. At the end of this part, the violin reintroduces the main theme of the first movement, but with a variation, more intense and dramatic. This dramatic and intense quality is also due to the guitar ostinato, which ends in a hysteric trill. This leads us again to the first part, ending the third movement and this work in a sudden setback, as an interrogation tag.

The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.

Sie sahen aus, als würden sie in festlichem Aufzug eine unterhaltsame Party feiern und den kurzen Sommer genießen. Diese Szenerie inspirierte den Komponisten zu Alpine Flowers’ Party! Die musikalische Party beginnt mit einer herzlichen Begrüßung, dann folgt ein fröhlicher Programmpunkt dem anderen. Ein spritziges Xylophonsolo, ein Walzer und ein Adagio mit abwechselnden Soli für Altsaxophon, Euphonium und Trompete führen zu einem brillanten Finale, in dem Blechbläser und Schlagzeug im Vordergrund stehen. Feiern Sie mit!

When you have been playing in a band for a long time, you will know that music belongs to the most beautiful moments in life, but also to the roughest times. Making music together can give you strength when things are difficult.To a Friend is a wonderfully comforting work for anyone going through a dark time. Jacob de Haan composed the work for his father in law, Gerard Bosch, a musician to the core. The piece received its first performance justweeks before his passing. On a sun-kissed evening, his friends, the musicians of his two music societies Oefening Baart Kunst (Practice Makes Perfect) Otterlo, and the Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion BandArtillery Trumpet Corps) played the work for Gerard - an unknowing yet beautiful goodbye.

Wanneer je al lang samen in een orkest speelt, weet je dat muziek hoort bij de mooiste momenten in het leven, maar ook bij de diepste dalen. Samen muziek maken kan je kracht geven wanneer je het moeilijk hebt. To a Friendis een prachtig troostrijk werk voor iedereen die donkere tijden meemaakt. Jacob de Haan componeerde het werk voor zijn schoonvader, Gerard Bosch, een muzikant in hart en nieren. Een paar weken voor diens overlijden was het klaarom te worden uitgevoerd. Op een zonovergoten avond speelden zijn vrienden, de muzikanten van zijn beide muziekverenigingen Oefening Baart Kunst Otterlo en het Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps het voor Gerard. Eenprachtig afscheid.

Gemeinsames Musizieren kann einem in schwierigen Zeiten Kraft geben. To a Friend istein wunderbar tröstliches Werk für jeden, der eine schwere Zeit durchlebt. Jacob de Haan komponierte das Werk für seinen Schwiegervater Gerard Bosch, der Musiker durch und durch war. Das Stück wurde nur wenige Wochen vor seinemTod uraufgeführt. An einem sonnigen Abend spielten seine Freunde, die Musiker seiner beiden Musikvereine Oefening Baart Kunst (Übung macht den Meister“) Otterlo und das Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps (Reunion BandArtillerie Trompet Corps) , das Werk für Gerard. Ein unbewusster und zugleich schöner Abschied.

Jacob de Haan a composé cette pièce pour son beau-père, Gerard Bosch, lui-même musicien passionné. Elle a étécréée quelques semaines avant son décès. Lors d’une fin de journée ensoleillée, ses amis, les musiciens de ses deux sociétés musicales (Oefening Baart Kunst Otterlo et le Reünie Orkest Artillerie Trompetterkorps ), ont interprétéla nouvelle composition pour Gerard. Ils l’ignoraient alors, mais ce petit concert constitua un adieu merveilleux.
