Hungarian Rhapsody N° 2 is the second in a set of 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies by composer Franz Liszt, and is by far the most famous of the set. Few other piano solos have achieved such widespread popularity, offering the pianist the opportunity to reveal exceptional skill as a virtuoso while providing an immediate and irresistible musical appeal for the listener.Both the original piano solo form and the orchestrated version of this composition have found widespread use in animated cartoons. “Composed by Giacomo Miluccio (1928-1999), Rhapsody is a piece for Solo Clarinet lasting three minutes. Really melodious yet quite slow, it requires an advanced level (8, 9) and some strong technique and skills. This melodious piece, starting Passionale, with a part Scherzando followed by a Tranquillo one, is using the high range of the instruments. It finishes A Tempo with a morendo sound. The work features numerous accidentals, some opportunity of improvisation and some long phrases for which the player will need to master their breathing skills. It is a really nice work to play in recitals and can also be used for contests. â€.

Singapore Rhapsody is an exciting work in two movements based on popular Malaysian folksongs. The songs that occur in the first movement are Rasa Sayang eh (a love song), Gelang Sipaku Gelang (a song about community spirit), Suriram (a song about a girl proclaiming her virtues) and Di-Tanjung Katong (a love song that takes place at the Cape Katong on the southeast coast of Singapore). The second movement features Lenggang Kangkung, which literally means “The swaying of the watercress,†Katang Lompat (a moralistic song about the symbolism of the frog) and finally Kenek kenek-lah Udang (a wedding song). Each movement of this enchanting work can be performed separately but acomplete performance will be the crowning moment of any concert. 'The significance of the Rhapsody composed in 1904 in Gerlicepuszta and Pozsony is well shown by the fact that Bartók subsequently reserved the designation 'Opus 1' of his last, mature opus numbering for this piece. By choosing this genre Bartók was clearly following in Liszt's footsteps. But he did not merely follow the Hungarian Rhapsodies with their parading of folkloristic art songs in a virtuoso instrumental fantasy. The formal coherence of Bartók's work allows us to infer the influence of the large-scale Liszt compositions he then knew, such as the B minor Sonata. Unlike Liszt, Bartók builds his Rhapsody not on familiar melodies but on themes of his own invention, yet hisstyle is still that of nineteenth-century folkiness, and draws on the art-music tradition based on the verbunkos and the csárdás.' Though he grew up in Vienna and Paris and spoke German as his native language, Ferenc Liszt's Hungarian patriotism was aroused by a natural disaster. ''Oh my wild and distant country! Your cry of pain has brought me back to you. I bow my head, ashamed that I have forgotten you for so long,'' he reacted to the news of the 1838 Danube floods that demolished much of Pest, and he announced a charity concert for the benefit of the victims. When he visited Hungary the following year, he was embraced by his compatriots with an unexpected enthusiasm that defied all description. This highly emotional encounter set his entire career onto a new track Hungarian motifs began to appear inhis music. This marked the beginning of the genesis of his 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies that spanned many decades. The opening theme of Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2, a piece that has acquired extraordinary popularity, was written down by Liszt in his sketchbook in 1847 in Ia i, Romania. The piece was published in 1851, later with separate cadenzas and ad-libitum variants added for two of Liszt s pupils. This revised (2020) edition, based on the New Liszt Edition, is distinguished by the inclusion of these, as well as a preface summarizing the latest findings of research, facsimile reproductions, and critical notes.

Carter Pann writes, the piece might have been titled Three Improvisations, but there is an expressive inertia baked in to these works which makes them truer as rhapsodies. This description tells us much about the work, whose movements are an enterprising tango, a bombastic central movement with virtuosic thrust, and a and a hymn heard from afar without any sense of marked time.Three Rhapsodies was commissioned by the American Composers Forum with complete support from the Thelma E. Hunter Fund. The premiere performance took place in Kilbourn Hall at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York by pianist Marina Lomazov.As with all of my piano works, this was very much an at-the-piano compositional experience. As a pianist I cannot imagine writing a solo work away from the instrument (though at times that would be quite convenient).The whole work explores a palette of impassioned emotions – sometimes veiled, sometimes emboldened, or even outrageous at times. There are technical freedoms in each movement, allowing the pianist to stretch their interpretive inclinations to great lengths. In this way the piece might have been titled Three Improvisations, but there is an expressive inertia baked in to these works which make them truer as rhapsodies.The first movement is a tango with real wanderlust. The second reminds me of Rachmaninoff’s Polka de W.R. in its bombast, but also Chopin’s sixteenth prelude with its sheer virtuosic thrust. The third is a hymn heard from afar with no rhythmic drive, only sheened sonority.
