Dvorák composed his “Slavonic Rhapsodies†op. 45 in 1878, initiating his so-called “Slavonic periodâ€. They were issued by the publisher Simrock the following year as three independent orchestral pieces (in D major, G minor and A-flat major) appearing under the same opus number.Now the “Slavonic Rhapsodies†are being issued separately in scholarly-critical editions. The editor Robert Simon has taken Dvorák’s authorised first edition as his principal source.

The Fifth Hungarian Rhapsody, published in 1853, emerged from several earlier versions. The double character indicated in the sobriquet âHéroïde élégiaqueâ is based on the two contrary themes: a âheroicâ theme in minor and an âelegiacâ theme in major, seasoned with characteristics of Liszt's âstyle hongroisâ such as augmented seconds and sharp dotted rhythms. Thanks to the slow tempo, No. 5 is one of Liszt's less difficult rhapsodies and thus offers a wonderful introduction to these musical reminiscences of his Hungarian homeland. Involved in this Henle Urtext edition, which also takes the autograph into account for the first time, were two eminent Liszt specialists: Mária Eckhardt provided the preface, Vincenzo Maltempo the fingerings.

He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano, he made a few subtle changes, particularly in m. 201, which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century.The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version. It draws on every known source and takes into account a previously ignored source that sheds new light on the piece.
