The Cello Sonata Op. 6 was composed over an apparently frequently interrupted period of three years, an extraordinarily long time for Strauss's early creative phase. The compositional process spawned two independent versions of the work, the first of which is published for the first time on the basis of the text in the Critical Edition of the Works of Richard Strauss in the current edition as a practical musical text. The genesis of the two versions and the reasons for revision can only be reconstructed in part: only one of the surviving autographs bears a date and the second version only survives in printed form. What is more, Strauss did not communicate in greater detail on this composition in correspondence with his family and friends. There are enormous differences between the two versions of the Sonata: Strauss deleted the entire second and third movements Larghetto and Allegro vivace, replacing them with a newly composed Andante and Finale. In the first movement, Allegro con brio, Strauss retained the thematic-motivic material and compositionally complex passages such as the three-voice fugue in the development section (from bar 241 in the first version and bar 275 in the second version) almost intact in the new version of the sonata, but also undertook extensive alterations, particularly in the structure of the piano part, the motivic-thematic development of the movement and its harmony which became far more ambitious.12 Particular attention should be drawn to the repetitive accompaniment of the con espressione theme beginning in bar 32 and the significantly shorter development in the first version. The current printed edition of the first version of Richard Strauss's Cello Sonata now makes it possible to follow Strauss's compositional development during this period. The significance of the differences between the versions also mean that two sonata compositions for violoncello and piano by Richard Strauss with fundamental disparities in their underlying character are now available for performance. o.Op. 82 TrV 133- We are grateful to the University of Edinburgh Library Centre for Research Collections for providing us with access to a manuscript of this work. At shelf-mark Mus.M.645 is a set of parts in the hand of an unknown copyist annotated by John Parr (the bassoonist of Sheffield) who also wrote a full score and second copies of the bassoon and bass parts. The score is dated 1930 and the bassoon part 1934. It is here entitled merely 'duet for flute and bassoon with orchestra' and ascribed to R. Strauss.   We are also grateful for advice from Dr Christian Wolf of the Richard-Strauss-Institut in Munich whohave access to a copy of  'der Zweikampf' made by Cl. Schubert but the Richard-Strauss-Archiv in Garmisch-Partenkirchen will not permit them to make a complete copy for us but has permitted sample pages to be copied confirming the identity of the music. They also affirm the considerable doubt as to Richard Strauss being the composer however no other composer has been suggested in his stead.  In the Strauss bibliography a date of composition of 1884 is given when he was twenty years old.   We would also like to acknowledge with thanks the help of Drs Jenny Nex and Lance Whitehead of Edinburgh in deciphering the manuscript and advising on the piano reduction.   In editing the work we have corrected a few evident errors and made the dynamics consistent. There was no given tempo indication in some of the parts but Parr added 'allegro moderato' which is also the tempo indication in the Munich manuscript.  He also suggested the bass pizzicato in most of the polacca but perhaps this was intended only for the double bass should one be present. There are some discrepancies between the Edinburgh score and parts which we have resolved somewhat arbitrarily on musical grounds.  The differences between the Munich and Edinburgh versions are mostly small as far as we can discern; the

Cette œuvre aujourd’hui encore extrêmement appréciée des instrumentistes à vent rappelle, dans son effectif comme dans sa structure, la «Gran Partita» de Mozart, que Strauss prit certainement en exemple. La Sérénade ne fut pas exécutée dans sa patrie bavaroise, mais créée à Dresde en 1882 sous la direction de Franz Wüllner, chef d’orchestre alors très estimé qui avait également tenu Rheingold (L’Or du Rhin) et la Walküre (La Walkyrie) de Richard Wagner sur les fonts baptismaux, puis, plus tard, avait créé les poèmes symphoniques de Strauss Till Eulenspiegel (Till l’Espiègle) et Don Quixote (Don Quichotte). As if looking back on his youth toward the end of his life Richard Strauss wrote a second concerto for horn and orchestra again in Eb major around sixty years after his first concerto for horn. This sublimely beautiful late work which gives no indication of the oppressive circumstances of Strauss? poor health and the Second World War was premiered in 1943 by Gottfried von Freiberg under the direction of Karl Böhm. It was not until after Strauss? death that the concerto appeared in print in London making a critical new edition on the basis of the autograph sources and performance material more than overdue. The editor Hans Pizka former principal horn of the BavarianState Opera in Munich learned first-hand about the performance tradition and genesis of the concerto as a pupil of Gottfried von Freiberg. For use in lessons and for performances the especially playable piano reduction by Johannes Umbreit is a great help.
